Planning Ahead

I've never been very organized or thought much about a will. But while taking care of my friend's pets, I realized that if something were to happen to her who would be there to take care of them. Very often it's the older pets who lose their owners. During this sad time, many of them will end up in animal shelters. Upon pondering this, I made the decision to put my pup in my living will, so that I know she'll be taken care of and not sent to a shelter. Please remember your pet in your will. Also please donate to Old Dog Haven and organizations like them who save the lives of these wonderful much loved pets whose owners didn't plan ahead.

Corgi Picnic

I'm getting ready for the Montana Corgi Picnic which will be held in Billings on June 10. I am delighted that the Corgi association has asked me to be a featured artist. There will be over 100 Corgis who attend their picnic. The picnic will have fly ball and other games. The Corgi Run will have all the Corgis running together toward their owners. I imagine waves of individual Corgis in a sea of dogs. In honor of their Corgi Rescues, here is one of my Corgi paintings.

Old Dog Haven: Helping Senior Dogs Bloom in New Homes

OldDog Haven is a very small group of people with a network of others trying to provide a loving safe home for senior dogs abandoned at this stage of their lives. When they have room, and the means, they take these dogs into their homes; if possible they adopt out those with a reasonable life-expectancy. They care for the rest as long as they have good quality of life. In addition, they try to assist owners in finding new homes for their senior dogs through their website and referrals.

All too many dogs of advanced years are rejected by their owners, or left behind when an elderly owner must give up their beloved pet and no family members want the dog. Instead of living cherished last years in a loving family they are dumped at shelters where their chance of adoption is almost zero, or passed around to others and ignored or left in the yard. Many of these dogs are in poor physical condition as well, making them even less appealing to others. Helping them is sometimes challenging, is often expensive, but is very very rewarding. Old Dog Havens goal is that their last years are happy and that they die safe and at peace, knowing they are loved. Wouldn't we all wish this for our own pets, and for ourselves?

Old Dog Haven is presently caring for 30 to 40 dogs a month, all in permanent or temporary foster homes. Old Dog Haven relys on their wonderful group of foster parents, professionals who donate their time or expertise, and very generous donors to keep these dogs happy and comfortable. They also use their website, other internet services, and an e-mail network to help owners place their senior dogs - many they never meet. Old Dog Haven is an IRS-approved 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charitable organization and relies on donations and fund-raising activities for its income. They do not receive any state or federal funds. All donations to ODH are tax deductible.

If you would like to see how you could help a senior dog bloom in it's last years please visit http://www.olddoghaven.org

JR and Jasmeene

Tonight I painted a 4"x6" oil sketch of a long-haired Jack Russell Terrier that was at TBAR last fall.

"JR" copyright V. Bridges Hoyt 2006
Although JR may no longer be available for adoption, there are many others to choose from, many of them just puppies, such as Jasmeene (pictured below). She just doesn't understand why anyone would drop off a tiny puppy in the country to fend for herself. Lucky for her, a Good Samaritan family found her and brought her to TBAR. They wanted to keep her, but their 10yr old pet dog, just diagnosed with cancer, isn't up to a new puppy in the house. So Jasmeene came to TBar to find her forever home. Their little girl who was very sad to part with the puppy, named her Jasmeene. This sweet little gal is a bundle of love that loves to run and play.

You can't help but laugh while watching her romp through the grass. She's a quick learner and will be completely housebroken shortly. This eight week old yellow & brown Staffordshire Terrier/Boxer mix comes with inoculations and a free required spay when she is old enough. Jasmeene has breathtaking blue eyes that you can't see well in this picture! And they're a little bluer, because Jasmeene doesn't know there is a forever home out there for her. Will you give her story a happy ending? Call TBAR today at (936) 878-2349.

Manatees Poised for Premature Downlisting

"It seems contradictory that in the same month the state reports a near-record number of manatee deaths, it also would move to downgrade protections for the sea cows...The public should not be fooled into thinking all is well for these jeopardized animals..."
-- Tampa Tribune Editorial, January 2006

For over four years now, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWCC) has been striving to downlist manatees from endangered to threatened status in the state of Florida. Although the proposal to downlist manatees has been on hold, now it is back on the fast track, and it seems inevitable that manatees will be downlisted by a vote of the FWCC Commissioners in June.

Inevitable, that is, unless we can mount a strong public awareness and grass roots campaign to stop this dangerous action. And we need your help to do it.

The FWCC is justifying their decision to downlist manatees by adopting a flawed imperiled species classification system that downlists manatees prematurely (see more information on this below).

There can be no doubt that threats are mounting for manatees: more people, more boats, more pollution, and the very real potential for warm waters from power plant effluents to be lost forever as aging plants are taken off line. Manatees need all the protection they can get.

What You Can Do:

1. Attend The Meeting: If you live in Florida, please attend the FWCC Commissioner's meeting on June 7 in West Palm Beach. Click here for more information and the address of the meeting location.

If you plan to attend, please call Janice Nearing at 1-800-432-5646 or e-mail her at jnearing@savethemanatee.org.

2. Send A Message On Downlisting: Submit your photo and "Please Don't Downlist Manatees" message to be featured in a PowerPoint presentation we are sending to the Commissioners and Governor Jeb Bush. Learn more >>

3. Send A Quick Letter: Please click on the link below to send a quick and easy online letter to the Commissioners and to Florida Governor Jeb Bush, telling them that you oppose downlisting manatees in Florida.

http://www.savethemanatee.org/actionalert.cfm?id=12

Thanks so much for your help on this critical issue for manatees. Your action now can make a huge difference!

How the FWCC Justifies Downlisting Manatees:

-In 2005, the FWCC modified its imperiled species classification system to incorporate the listing criteria of the IUCN-World Conservation Union (IUCN), a world authority on endangered species.

-However, there was one critical difference: The FWCC did not properly align the IUCN's categories with the category names. The IUCN's "Critically Endangered" category became the FWCC's "Endangered" category. The IUCN's "Endangered" category became the FWCC's "Threatened" category.

-If the FWCC had aligned the IUCN names and categories, the manatee population would clearly continue to meet the criteria for endangered status under the most recent scientific review.

What Will Happen To Manatees If They Are Downlisted

-State funding for management actions, enforcement, and research would likely be cut back and/or redirected.

-The boating public will erroneously think that manatees are in recovery and speed zones could be lifted in deadly areas across Florida. Already this year, a resolution to roll back speed restrictions in Brevard County was passed by the county commission and presented to the FWCC.

-When new marinas and docks are built, manatees won't receive the same degree of protection as they can under current policies.

-State downlisting could pave the way for manatees to be downlisted at the federal level under the Endangered Species Act.

-For all these reasons, lasting solutions to the manatee's long-term survival may never be implemented and the actual recovery of manatees from Endangered status might never be possible.

Baby Raccoons and Other Wildlife Babies

Yesterday, I saw my first baby raccoon up close and personal. I'm holding Mochi in the photo. He is wrapped in a towel because he just finished his bath.

Mochi was found next to his mother who was killed by a car. He was taken in by a certified animal rehabilitation facility. Mochi was only a couple of weeks old.

Today Mochi is almost 5 weeks and delightful as you can see. He stole my heart in less than a second. His soft purring chortle brought smiles to everyone there. Mochi must be kept warm, out of direct sunlight and feed every four hours. When he is old enough to care for himself, he must either be returned to the wild or find a permant home in a wildlife facility.

If Mochi was a female, it is certain she would be returned to the wild. But, male raccoons have a harder time being reintroduced into the wild. Female raccoon move into their first heat and know immediately what to do.

It is so easy to be enamored when you see a baby animal. But remember the mother is probably near by. Unless you see the body of the mother as in Mochi's situation, please remember; leave the babies alone. The mother will return. Often the best thing we can do to help wildlife babies is leave them alone.

"Those who wish to pet and baby wildlife love them, but those who respect their natures and wish to let them live their natural lives, love them more ." -From the April 28th entry in Edwin Way Teale's Circle of the Seasons: The Journal of a Naturalist's Year

Art Filled with Life and Spirit

Photos courtesy of Taylor Lehr copyright © 2006
This is Art (short for King Arthur), one of the new colts at True Blue Animal Rescue near Brenham, Texas. What a fine horse he will make and how lucky to have been born at T-bar where he will find the most loving of care. I find energy in this young colt so filled with life and spirit. Art has been unofficially appointed the Art Helping Animals 2006 mascot. Art will be finding his way into a painting soon. See additional photos of Art and others at True Blue Animal Rescue.

Dietrich was seen being dumped on a deserted road in Washington Co. along with his brother, Sutter. Both beautiful German Pointers were scared and alone. Now safely taken into TBAR, Dietrich is safe and cared for, but he needs a forever home of his own. He is a very loyal and devoted dog that wants to do all he can to please the people around him. He gets along with other dogs and animals and enjoys playing and romping around with them. He enjoys attention and being scratched behind the ears. At approximately one year of age, Dietrich has reached his adult weight of 40 lbs. He’s neutered and has all of his shots. Please consider giving this special boy a safe and loving home by calling TBAR today at (936) 878-2349.

You can help Dietrich, Art and all the other horses, dogs, cats, and pigs at T-bar by purchasing a painting, adopting an animal or by making a cash contribution directly to the charity. Thanks in advance for your support.

Old Dog Haven: An amazing rescue organization that works to provide loving homes for senior dogs abandoned in their twilight years. These elderly canines generally would have a slim-to-none chance of being adopted in a regular animal shelter situation. Old Dog Haven also provides Hospice care to senior dogs deemed too frail to be subjected to another change in living conditions, too sick to be rehomed, or with very limited time left to live. http://www.olddoghaven.org/

Help Protect Manatees and other Marine Mammals

Ask Your Representative to Oppose H.R. 4075

The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote on amendments to the Marine Mammal Protection Act the week of May 15, and we urgently need your help to uphold this important conservation law. The bill most likely to move (H.R. 4075) is sponsored by Rep. Richard Pombo, R-Calif., and would severely weaken many of the Act's key provisions.

Adopted in 1972, the Marine Mammal Protection Act provides federal protection for manatees and other marine mammals, including restrictions on products derived from these animals, and greatly enhances the provisions of the federal Endangered Species Act.

What You Can Do:

Please contact your U.S. representative and ask him or her to Oppose H.R. 4075 or any other effort to weaken the Marine Mammal Protection Act:

1. Send a quick online letter: Our friends at the Center for Biological Diversity have provided an online letter on this issue that you can send to your congressperson. Just click on the link below:

http://actionnetwork.org/campaign/MMPA?rk=ddqTHEs1wzU2W

OR

2. Call your representative or send a personal letter or e-mail:
You can get his or her contact information by visiting www.congress.org. Just click on the Congress button in the left-hand menu and enter your zip code in the next screen. It's that easy!

Thanks for your help on this important issue for marine mammals. - Robin Andreae

Colorado: a tribute to a very special dog

The painting, LOBO, was recently purchased by Colorado's owners. Colorado was a German Shepherd. LOBO is a 16 X 20 Acrylic Impasto with thick knife strokes visible in the painting.

Colorado's human partner comes from the Southeastern part of the US and while on vacation traveling through Montana, he stumbled on my little Gallery at the Rue d'artistes in Billings Montana. Before he left my gallery, he purchased the painting shown here and he told me the heart-warming story of Colorado.

Colorado was in a kill shelter sentenced to die the next day, when one of the shelter workers called the police dog training unit and said, "there is a wonderful German Shepherd we think would be a great police dog." When the officer said he'd stop down next week and check him out, the shelter volunteer responded: "he won't make it past tomorrow." So the officer squeezed in a visit to the shelter and took Colorado with him when he left.

Colorado excelled at his training. He was a Champion Police dog winning all kinds of police dog competitions. For the rest of his canine life he worked side by side with his human partner as a full fledged canine officer. His human partner said that Colorado knew exactly when it was time to work. He was the best partner a police officer could have had and a wonderful addition to the family. Colorado was the lucky one. He lived with his human companion in a forever home until he crossed the rainbow bridge.

So check out your local shelters. There may be a dog like Colorado who is waiting to be a champion.

Mountain Aire

It's springtime and what better place to enjoy the fresh air then on a mountain top! Introducing "Jack" the model for this sunny painting that is painted to help the good work of NARA. The Goal of NARA's Rescue Committee is to locate prompt and safe assistance for any purebred Airedale Terrier with no responsible owner or breeder to meet his needs. The Airedale Terrier Club of America (ATCA) Rescue & Adoption Committee maintains a network of contacts across the country to aid in the re-homing of purebred Airedale Terriers who are lost or abandoned. These contacts are volunteers located in most states, as well as Canada, working to help Airedales in need, adopting them to permanent loving homes. Funds donated to National Airedale Rescue, Inc. are distributed on an as-needed basis to Airedale Rescue volunteers and groups who have agreed to abide by the ATCA Rescue & Adoption Committee policies and guidelines. Blue Hawaii

This painting depicts an adult humpback whale swimming under a young humpback. This is probably the youngster's second trip from the cold waters near Alaska to the warm blue waters of his birthplace.
There is now good news and bad news for these travelers. Once thought ot be nearing extinction, their numbers have grown. They are a common sight in the Lahaina straight now a days and tourists by the thousands flock to see these magnificent creatures. The bad news is that like the Manatees, the whales have increasingly had collisions with boats. The young whales that are born in these waters, need to surface more often and are not as experienced as the adults. Unfortunately they are the most common victim of such collisions. There is now talk of limiting the number of whale watching boats during calving season. So, although, you may not have as much opportunity to see them up close, they are thriving. It's a truly a wonderful comeback story! To learn more about this issue, please click here. ~ Robin Andreae

Packs, Herds and Families

Animals are part of our families.

As many of you know, the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina is around the corner…and thankfully, there’s a way that we may be able to protect our beloved animals from a second disaster similar to this. Many people would not abandon their pets.

Congress is considering a bill that would create better rescue plans for companion animals in disasters, called The Pet Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act). If this bill is passed animals will be part of a disaster plan. A disaster plan for animals helps both animals and people. Do what you can to let your congress representative know that your animals are part of your family.

The Dalmatians Playing are now available as a print to benefit animals.

Art That Touches Hearts!

The most wonderful part of being a member of Art Helping Animals is
the dedication that all the artists have toward helping out Animals in need. I am honored to be among folks who are passionate about rescue!
In the last 90 days the aritsts have raised over $5000.00 to help several rescues and
wildlife sanctuaries.
Because of the efforts of artists some of the rescues have even been able to expand
programs to reach out and save animal lives such as Save the Dalmatians Senior Rescue
program.

We have heard from folks on our website, in our guestbook and via email about how
the artwork has touched them. There is no greater honor than to make a difference and touch a heart!

I have posted some of the photos of pets in great need of a home- please consider helping if you can!
