Where's Dave?

If anyone wants to know where Dave is today? Here's a photo of him at work. The little guy is the flying fox squirrel, Scrat.

You can see that the Director of HSUS NRRO has his hands full with his latest rescue.

Where's Dave, Director of HSUS NRRO?

It's fascinating finding out where Dave the Director of HSUS NRRO is and is going during the next week. Here's the latest from "Where's Dave?" as he continues to make a difference in the lives of animals. What is amazing is that in one week he has hands-on work feeding fox squirrels and meeting with with the leaders of a seven state agrcultural

It has been another interesting week. I have been traveling in Montana and Colorado with two unweaned fox squirrels that fell from a tree in Billings. They first traveled with me from Montana to Colorado: to the Red Rocks National Park. They accompanied me through a tour of a soon to be opened environmental research center in the privately owned town of LakeView, Colorado. In between their six hour feedings I managed to drive to Helena, Montana for a fundraiser for the Montana Wildlife Rehab Center and to meet with some people in the capital city of Montana on wildlife and legislative issues.

Returning to Billings, I took the squirrels home and set them up in a large bird cage as they have begun to eat soft food and and are under the care of my youngest daughter while I am back in Denver today meeting with seven state agricultural groups about potential legislation to help pigs, chickens and veal calves in Colorado.

I return home to Billings Monday night and have a full slate of media interviews for Tuesday about the Vick Dogfighting case. Then I have my monthly conference call reviewing conservation easements for the Wildlife Land Trust...but the best part will be getting home to resume care of my two little nutty buddies Scrat and Squeakers!!!

BEFORE & AFTER

BEFORE...

&
AFTER!

What a difference some care and love make.

Meet LouDog...

This 1.5 yr old girl was rescued from a FLORIDA shelter.

Her story is like so many.

STRIKE ONE!

She was turned into a shelter by her original family who just didn't want her any more.

STRIKE TWO!

She was adopted and then returned after one month because her 2nd family was moving.

And THEN...

Animal control personally went to beg our foster dad from DALMATIAN RESCUE OF TAMPA BAY to take her because she was so adorable and he did!

SAVED!

One very lucky girl. Just a baby really...already such a hard life and would have been put down if the agent for Animal Control had not intervened.

She is going to be spayed this week...she had kennel cough and like so many rescues in Florida, is heartworm positive. She will be treated.
She deserves a secure and loving home and life!

I will be painting her for charity. She will be a "star" and we will shine a little light on her and for others like her who have similar stories.

One animal at a time....every life matters!

Where's Dave, Director of HSUS NRRO

I just received this from Dave (Director of HSUS NRRO - Northern Regional Rockies Office of the Humane Society. He's been rescuing wildlife all week. His rescue reminds me of the phrase "all creatures great and small". All creatures great and small are rescued by Dave. He was up rescuing turtles until almost 3:00 AM last night... talk about dedication.

(Near Billings) 8/18/07

Dr Hsia (Pingtung, Taiwan) and I worked with headlamps in two feet of mud and sludge until 22:50 last night capturing the last of the 35 Western Painted Turtles that were displaced by the filling in of the JTL pond this week. We ended up catching 17 in traps, 6 with nets, 2 with an huge end loader and ten by slipping through the toxic mud and catching by hand. 34 were treated with basic oil spill technique and released in park or private ponds. The last one has a partially split carapace and I have her on antibiotics... and will hold for a week and arrange for shell repair...it was near death last night...but better today in warm and clear water.... We also relocated about 200 tadpoles..but am holding them in my duckling tank until I can confirm species... from flashlight view it appears to be a mixture of non-native bull-frog, Northern Leopard and Western Toad tadpoles (or Pauli-wogs as we like to call them). Dr Hsia got great training during his visit but "he already say" the turtle rescue, baby squirrel rescue ( I am bottle feeding 3) and the bushy-tailed Woodrat rescue were the highlights of his ten day adventure in MT and CO.

Where's Dave, Director of HSUS NRRO?

If you think that the director of HSUS NRRO (Northern Rockies Regional Office of the Humane Society) wears a white shirt and sits at a desk, think again. I've asked Dave to tell us about where he is weekly and how he uses the special AHAT fund that is supported by ArtHelpingAnimals. The AHAT fund is used only for rescues. So here's the latest scoop on "Where's Dave?" in Dave's own words.

This week is typical. I have been in five states, if we don't count the state of confusion. Yesterday I responded to an emergency request to rescue some turtles and pond life under the blade of an end loader that was filling in the pond to make room for Billings shopping mall! In the last 20 hours we have caught 14 Western Painted Turtles , and some toads. This morning we expect both some more turtles and some fish in our traps. The construction workers were EXCITED that they did not have to be the ones to have to push the final load of dirt over these animals!

Two days before I was in Idaho (Henrys Lake) and Montana to visit a new environmental education center and the base camp of the Buffalo Field Campaign, and then off to a small Montana town to rescue a Bushy-Tailed Woodrat The Hutterite colony had tried everything imaginable to trap or remove the cute rodentia from a trailers ductwork. I and a visiting animal welfarist from Pingtung, Taiwan pulled up a floor grate in a bathroom and set a few live traps baited with cheese, peanut butter and one with a ball of plain aluminum foil. We sealed off the bathroom and within 25 minutes the B.T. Woodrat could not resist the treasure of aluminum foil and we had caught him and quickly transported him to a woodrat habitat containing brush piles, rock piles, a water source and some native food sources. Thanks for trying to keep track of me!!!!"

HSUS NRRO invites a Wild Horse Herd to Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Part 2 - Inviting a herd of Wild Horses to Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

When the HSUS NRRO team showed up in South Dakota they had to invite the wild horse herd to breakfast. lunch and dinner. Of course sending a dinner invitation to a wild horse herd isn't as easy as it sounds. First you order the hay. Lots of hay.

Ten of these hay bales were delivered

HSUS NRRO had to deliver the hay in strategic spots for the wild horses. A strategic spot is an open area so that the horses circle the hay and the mare's rumps present a good target for the dart.

When the HSUS NRRO team left Billings, Montana it was a warm spring day in the high 50's by the time the team arrived in SD a spring snow storm stomped into SD making everything harder for the HSUS team.

Snow, Bone chilling winds and soggy fields greeted the HSUS NRRO Team

The wild horses with their new foals were very excited to be invited to breakfast, lunch and dinner

The drought in SD reduced the grass for grazing and the wild horse herd was very hungry. So the hay was the perfect distraction for the darting of mares.

HSUS NRRO and the Wild Horse Herds of SD - part 1

The Wild Horse Herd of South Dakota

HSUS NRRO UPDATE
I think it is exciting to know how our donations help our charities. HSUS NRRO - the Humane Society of the United States Northern Regional Rockies Office - serves a whopping eight state area. This mean that Dave Pauli, director, is often out in the field 7 days a week. For example, spring of 2007 found Dave and his two man crew of volunteers in SD. They were conducting a contraception program with a wild horse herd

This is a cutting edge process for maintaining wild horse herds without the dreaded "round ups". The annual wild horse round ups still occur many places and mean breaking up the herd creating untold stress on the horses and often taking foals from mothers. After all this the BLM offers the horse for sale trying to place the horses in homes or worse sending them off to slaughter.

But in SD this year HSUS NRRO made a difference - thanks in part to our donations. HSUS NRRO used an immunocontraceptive called PZP (porcine zona pellucida). The zona pellucida is a thick membrane that surrounds the unfertilized eggs of mammals. In order for an egg to be fertilized, sperm must first bind to, and then penetrate the zona pellucida. When porcine (pig) zona pellucida is injected into the horses, antibodies are produced which attach to the mares zona pellucida, preventing any sperm from attaching to the egg, therefore preventing fertilization. It is like putting super glue in a lock.

Stay tuned for more photos and the whole story about contraceptive darting the Wild Horse Herd in SD.

Just A Reminder......

We are now well into the hottest month of the year. Please, please, please do not leave your dog in a parked car! Even with the window cracked the temperature will quickly be too high for safety.

If you are going somewhere that your pet will have to stay in the car do the right thing and leave them at home. Make sure they have plenty of fresh water and if outside a shady place to lay.

If you should see a pet in distress left in a parked car please contact the parking lot security or call the police. A note left on the car is not enough, remember, you could be saving a life.

Thank you

Do You Have A Plan?

Many pets find themselves homeless because their owners just assumed that friends or family would take on the responsibility if they were no longer able. Divorce, Illness. financial hardship and death are among the many reasons pets find themselves in shelters.

Do you have a plan for your pet if you were to suddenly no longer be able to care for him/her?

Old Dog Haven has some suggestions to help you plan ahead to make sure that your beloved pet is safe and loved their whole lives. Please visit the link below for these helpful tips:

"Under Dog" that is an UNDERSTATEMENT!

With the release of the new movie "Under Dog"...
BEAGLES may now be the new "PRODUCT" of puppy millers.
Puppy Mills are breeders kennels who churn out the popular breeds to ship to pet shops.
Those shops that you see in malls and other places that sell puppies for high prices and usually in poor health...and if people knew where the pups started life...well lets just say they would be appalled by the circumstances of birth.
***
There are may rescues across the country to testify to the facts and they have MANY dogs discarded, afraid and lonely either waiting their turn to be "put down" for lack of funds and space, or if they are lucky enough to be in a progressive and compassionate NO KILL shelter ...waiting for a forever family in a forever home!

HSUS NRRO has asked for our help.

The Humane Society of the US, Northern Regional Rockies Office just emailed me and asked me to let everyone know that we truly need your help.

There are bills going before Federal Legislation which would help animals. An important bill is on farm animals. Please contact your federal legislators to support this bill! This is a one time opportunity to make a difference with a phone call to your Legislator.

I didn’t realize it, but they only vote every 5 years on the Ag stuff….so it’s so very important to help farm animals during this session!!!

The Farm Animal Stewardship Purchasing Act sets very basic, reasonable requirements for the treatment of farm animals whose products are purchased by the federal government. The bill requires producers who supply farm animal-derived products to the federal government to ensure that the animals have:

1) adequate shelter, with space to stand, lie down, move their heads freely, extend their limbs, and turn around;

2) adequate food and water, without force-feeding or starvation; and

3) adequate veterinary care, including prompt treatment or humane euthanasia when sick or injured.

These are just basic requirements!!! Please take a moment and check this out. For more information go to

Great News from HSUS about Stopping Horse Slaughter!!!!!!!

I just received this wonderful information from HSUS NRRO. As you may know I live in Montana and have been emailing senators and representatives for over two years on this issue. Finally we have good news. Our Montana Wild Horse herds are a little safer. If your representative was helpful in getting this passed please send him or her a "Thank You".

This just came in:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

U.S. House Votes to Take Horses Off the Menu

WASHINGTON (August 3, 2007) — Late last night, the U.S. House of Representatives once again agreed to stop slaughtering American horses for human consumption, by adding a provision to the Agriculture spending bill for 2008 that prohibits the use of funds to allow horse slaughter to continue.

SAVE THE WOLVES...please read!

JOIN The campaign...end the killing.

summary:
Actions taken:67,739
Actions needed:65,000
Officials in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are now seeking public comment on the agency’s proposal to accept Wyoming’s disastrous wolf management plan and to give Idaho and Wyoming vast new powers to kill wolves -- even while these magnificent animals remain listed under the Endangered Species Act.
UPDATE: Enough actions were logged!

Horses, Horses Everywhere!

Last February True Blue Animal Rescue and Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society took in 25 neglected horses at the request of Robertson County Sheriff's Department. It was a sad case of neglect and abuse for the approximately 25 horses and 100 cattle. Dead animals were visible from the road and complaints poured into the sheriff's office who needed assistance due to the numbers of animals involved. That's when BEHS and TBAR stepped up to the plate. Please read more HERE about this rescue operation and the horses now available for adoption or sponsorship.
