New Contest - Raffle, for Dogs Wearing Hats

I'm having a contest on my page at Pam's Watercolor Pet Portraits starts now, ends Friday May 13th, 2011.

In my quest to go big or go home, I decided to paint a BIG painting size 18x24 with a value of $575.00.
All you have to do to participate is submit a photo of a dog wearing a hat to my page. (link above)
I will paint that I admire the most and have them sitting at a bar. This painting should have mass appeal and prints will be given to the contests who's dog makes it to canvas.

Then as a second step, I still want to go big with a donation to a rescue this month. So, lets have a raffle on the painting, $5.00 per ticket - 10.00 for three chances to win. I will list the names in a spreadsheet and use Random.com to pic a name. The winner will receive the painting, and 25% of the monies collected will be sent to the rescue of the winners choice.

Come see the pictures that are already on my wall, help me go BIG for MAY! With over 6,000 people on my page, we should be able to really go BIG!

Some of you are familar with Lucky the kitten that I took in on Christmas Eve. She has been here at the hospital waiting for a surgery consult at the University of Georgia and had that today. But let me back up and tell you how we got here . . . . .

We first saw Lucky back at the end of August with what appeared to be a wound on her tail and some type of wound in her perineal region next to her rectum. Her family thought it was some type of trauma. Over the few weeks, while Lucky was coming in for her vaccinations, the wound wasn't healing.

November went by and most of December. On the 22nd of Dec, Lucky's Mom called and her husband brought Lucky in. Lucky had weeks worth of poop all over her rear end, flanks, and rear legs. Once we got her cleaned up the best we could, she appeared to have some type of fistula as she had a vaginal discharge that looked a lot like poop.

In talking with the family, it wasn't looking good for Lucky. Some of the family wanted Lucky euthanized. Some didn't. And some felt that the most humane thing to do would be to throw her out somewhere. And it seemed that the dumping her somewhere was going to be her fate. On Christmas Eve. With it being 22 degrees outside. With poop on her rear end. And it was going to snow the next day.

So I took Lucky in to get her out of harms way.

The Teaching Hospital is on a holiday schedule the week before Christmas until after News Year. Most of the students are gone, and most of the cases are emergencies only. Lucky originally had an appointment last week when the 2nd snow storm hit. And was rescheduled for today.

I think it's in the Movie Dirty Harry, there's the line,

" Opinions are like ass holes. Everyone Has One."

Well, it seems that Lucky was born with no opinion. And no ass hole.

"Atresia Ani" is the fancy name for it. If you insert a thermometer into her rectum, it's like a closed pouch. And that's where the fistula developed into her vagina.   (I hope no one is about to eat dinner after reading this by the way. . . .) Rectovaginal Fistula.

The next time you feel like calling someone an AssHole, take the fancy route and tell them, "You are so NOT ATRESIA ANI." By the time they google that, you will have safely left the building.

So, at this point, Lucky has 2 options.
1. Euthanasia.
2. Surgery to try and repair the fistula.

Surgery Estimate- $2000-2500.   There are possible complications as even routine surgeries have risk of complications. Colons don't like surgery. Surgical sites don't like poop on them. There is also the risk of nerve damage to her sphincter muscle resulting in fecal incontinence. But at least I (we, they) tried to give Lucky the best quality of life in the first place.

Now I know that some of you are thinking, "That sounds like a beautiful case for surgery students to study. So much better than a routine spay. Why can't they do it pro-bono or at a really reduced rate?"

And it is a fantastic case. You just don't see things like this everyday. But I can't expect the teaching hospital to do the surgery for free. They are too many expenses involved- salaries, utilities, medical lucky supplies, etc. It can't all be covered by tuition alone. Poor college students pay a lot as it is. However, sometimes when cases go way over the estimate, the hospital does try to write some or all of that off. So I personally think it all works out in the end.

When I posted the first photos of Lucky of Facebook and Flickr, people offered to donate some funds to help her out, but I had to first find out if surgery was even a possibility. And it is. So, the University has set up a fund for her.

It is set up through Sundown Surgery Fund at the University website so any donation is tax deductible. It is important to note in the Notes or Comments section that the donation if for the Lucky Fund.

15% Donations for the FL Shar-pei Rescue

I have a web link on the FL Sharpei Rescue site, and we have been waiting for quite some time for someone to purchase art so that I may make a donation for the rescue. The Shar-pei is a special breed, and they often times need surgery on the eyes. So, I had offered 15% of my art sales to them and posted an event a few times on FB. But, after many months, yet no orders to paint a Shar-pei. This weekend my first order came in, and this client wants two portraits and three ornaments. YEA!! This 15% is going to be a nice little donation.

Pam Utton gets some of her first paintings published in new book!

Pam Utton is an emerging pet portrait artist, from the Panhandle of Florida. She started painting last fall for a hobby, and a friend asked her if she could paint a dog for a Christmas present. After that first painting, Pam was hooked on painting dogs. Since she had always loved animals and nature, creating them with paint on canvas came naturally. She would often say she

painted with the rhythm of her soul. She knew the in order to sell more paintings she would have to develop a skill and a following so she used social media to accomplish this. Her goal was to become a known artist, who was trusted and had a reputation of helping others. She was able to gather thousands of people on her new Facebook fan page. Her internet personality shined and people were encouraging her to become a full time artist. She frequently gave away prizes and free paintings to get her work seen and have word of mouth work for her. Alaqua Open House in Freeport FL Dec 11th

I will be attending the Alaqua open house in Freeport FL on December 11th from Noon - 4:00 PM. I am in the process of painting a few Florida theme ornaments to offer. They are a smaller glass ornament and each one will have some sand and shells placed on the inside along with a whimsical painting on the outside. Search and Rescue Dog - A New Job For Pearl

A New Job For Pearl

As a writer some stories you write have a real impact on your life. In this case I was intrigued to find that not only was Pearl, a search and rescue dog, who herself was rescued from the shelter. Reading "A New Job For Pearl", I discovered a new prospective on how animals can help us.

Than I learned more about the dedication and determination of the 2nd grad chilldren of Rancho Romero School in Alamo, CA, their teacher and all those volunteers involved with raising money for the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation to train another search and rescue dog. I was so taken by it I too wanted to help these children raise the money and make people aware of how animals can impact our lives.

I wrote two articles about Pearl:

Honey and her kitten, Prince, were found by a good Samaritan who has given them a roof over their heads and is fostering them until they can be adopted to their FOREVER HOME!

Her foster Mom says that she loves to be loved and loves attention. It is believed that she has some oriental breeding in her heritage. She is long and sleek and has an angular face of a Siamese or Burmese with some calico markings on her head.

A real sweetie. Can you give her a home?

RIMROCK HUMANE SOCIETY CHOSEN BY INTERNATIONAL ARTS GROUP

Roundup Animal Charity works with artists from 9 states and 2 countries to help local animals.

Art Helping Animals (AHA), an international group of artists who support animal charities, announced that Rimrock Humane Society (RHS) has been chosen as one of their official charities. Artists from 9 states and two countries create art and sell it with a donation from the sales going to support homeless animals. Although the artists paint all kinds of subjects, they often paint the charities' homeless pets as a way of gaining attention for the animals and hopefully assisting in a finding them a forever home.

Texan Vernita Bridges Hoyt painted Toya, a part Siamese cat who has been waiting for a forever home the past 2 years at the RHS in Roundup, Montana. “We are absolutely thrilled and honored to have been chosen by the AHA as a recipient of their generous charitable donations”, stated Sandy Church, President of the Humane Society. “Combining the creative spirit of these artists and the plight of our homeless animals is powerful and emotionally moving” she stated.

Professional artist Vernita Bridges Hoyt specializes in portraits of children and pets but paints other subjects as well. Her oil paintings have been described as Impressionist with a Texas twist. Vernita is one of the six co-founding members of "Art Helping Animals".

Hoyt and her fellow artists donate a portion of their sales to animal charities across the United States. Rimrock Humane Society was chosen because of their many unique programs such as the “virtual” shelter where all animals live in loving foster homes and not in cages or kennels, stringent adoption protocols and commitment to reducing pet overpopulation with an aggressive low cost spay/neuter program.

The Rimrock Humane Society headed by Sandy Church. Rimrock Humane Society is entering their 9th year of helping animals in Montana. Helping the homeless and neglected animals is their number one concern. RHS uses foster homes and works to network with other shelters and rescues. Here is a little about the Rimrock Humane Society in Sandy's words:

It is all about the animals, people! We here at the Rimrock Humane Society like to think outside the "box". We are blessed that our concept of maintaining a "virtual" shelter works so successfully! But how could it not? All of our animals live in the care of loving foster homes and NOT in a cage or kennel. Their lives, while they wait for a new forever family, are stress free and healthy. When potential adopters want to meet an animal, they do so in the comfort of a loving home observing that animal in a relaxed environment (getting a good "read" on the true nature of the pet). It is a win/win situation in which the animals, our adopters and our donors appreciate!

RHS uses technological advances such as computerized record-keeping and microchip pet identification that enhances the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of our low end operations budget. The Society operates as an independent nonprofit organization supported by individual and corporate donations. RHS does not receive government funding.

RHS is at the close of our eighth year of assisting the homeless, neglected and abused animals of this area. 2009 has proven to be a very busy year for us with 89 animals coming through our program. Some were reunited with their families, others went into specific breed rescue and the rest found loving, forever homes through our stringent adoption program. Every animal that passes through our program only reaffirms our commitment to the care, rehabilitation and placement of these “innocents” who cannot help themselves.

Our Community Spay/Neuter Program (CSNiP), now in its fourth year, continues to grow leaps and bounds as owners realize that for a nominal donation, they can be responsible and have their pets altered. Since the inception of this program to date, the RHS has paid for the spay/neuter surgeries for 587 cats and 277 dogs! Those are numbers to be proud of; certainly putting a dent in pet overpopulation for this area. It is a fairly expensive program to keep afloat with vet expenses totaling over $14,000 this year already, however, we are undaunted in our mission to help control the influx of unwanted pets in our community.

The new Guardians just adore the new members of the family and it is very apparent NOEL & HOLLY are making themselves right at home.

This traveling pair have been seen wandering all over Winder, Georgia hoping someone would adopt them for the past two months.

How anyone could look out their front door, see these two and not let them in to stay is amazing to me. Just one look and they win me over.

They originally were seen separately and then they teamed up with the dog always following the cat. Never the other way around.

When we found out Animal Control was going to be called, we decided we just couldn't risk them being PTS.

We sent a wonderful volunteer to pick them up and transport them to our vet in Greenville, SC.

We have had them both fully vetted.

Holly, the dog, had to be spayed.

Noel had already been neutered, which we are very thankful for, since I bet he just loves to have a good time.

They are both as friendly as can be and would make the perfect ready made family.

It's Christmas time. Let's give them a present of a new life together with a wonderful family that will love on them as much as we do.

" DEBO"...ADOPTED! from BONES (Beagles of New England States)

I had the pleasure of using Debo as my MUSE for 2 paintings for BONES!

I got the word this morning from his new "mom" Judy that he is lovingly adopted and they can't be more thrilled with him. They already love this handsome boy dearly!

Debo was the model for my "I Will BEE Happy" and "A Wish on the Moon" oils.

ADOPTED!!!

I just listed the finished painting with "PHOEBE" as my MUSE for OLD DOG HAVEN...I started it when she was listed on their site for Adoption...and then got the word that she had indeed

found her FOREVER HOME!

the painting is still available (see our ART BLOG) but the good news is another SENIOR dog

finds a loving home for the rest of her days!

This month of November is already upon us...thoughts of family and sharing bounty at our traditional THANKSGIVING feasts will be in our thoughts as we prepare for the season of giving.

I was visiting the Facebook site this morning and saw a Rescue Shelter Challenge telling of a matching gift for rescue for one of my local Rhode Island shelters(Friends of Bristol Animal Shelter.) Allen Shawn Feinstein charities offers matching gifts when you give to several of the local orgs at this time every year. A wonderful tradition from this local benefactor that really helps make a difference to charitable giving.

So it inspired me today to make

the whole MONTH of NOVEMBER a way to GIVE THANKS and not just on THANKSGIVING!

BONES - Helping Beagles Find Their Way Home

Beagles Of New England States (B.O.N.E.S.) rescue is one of our long standing AHA supported rescues. They do wonderful work helping hundreds of gorgeous Beagles of all ages find new homes.
All of their rescues go into foster care, usually with other beagles and begin adapting to the family life that some of them have never really had. They all do very well in that eventually homes are found and they post the most WONDERFUL stories of success on their site.

DEBO is 5 year old male Good with dogs, cats, and kids over 8
This very cute, handsome fellow is Debo. He is a 5 year old pup who is looking for someone to share his world with. Debo is a happy go lucky guy, who absolutely love people and thinks there is nothing better in the whole world than to share a snuggle with his humans. Debo is very playful and love all toys! He also loves other dogs, although he can be a bit rough when playing with his doggy friends. He gets along just fine with cats too.

Debo is very energetic, so because of his high energy level, we do not recommend a home with small or young children; he would never hurt them, but could accidentally knock them over during play time.
Debo is blind in one eye and receives daily eye drops; it may be necessary to remove the eye at some point.
If you are looking for a happy, energetic pup to share your life with, take a look at Debo!

Artist note: It was serendipity that I was looking through BONES beagles up for adoption for some inspiration to paint new pieces for the rescue when I found Debo. At the VERY same time I was printing out a bunch of images for studio refs one of my friends at BONES was emailing me pics of the annual Beagle Bash that they just had. The image above is one of hers and she wrote the caption. She also told me that she had just heard from the good woman who pulled him from a shelter in TN and got him into foster care through BONES...everyone was remarking how well he has done...now he just needs that new family to love him all the days of his life.

So much work goes on behind the scenes that it is almost too much to mention.

But I will.

Art Helping Animals is a very small fellowship...less than 20 artists at any given time that work their brushes off to help homeless animals in need.

We have contributed over 68,000.00 and counting to help shelter animals by donating a portion of our art sales to non-profit rescues coast-to-coast and around the world.

We do it "ONE ANIMAL AT A TIME, ONE BRUSH STROKE AT A TIME"

and many people say it must be "fun" to paint...to create art.

Yes....that is the easy part.

Anyone want Straggly?

You can even change his name to Scruffy, Scrawney, or Stringbean (skinny like a stringbean).

I went outside a few minutes ago, to put something in my truck, and heard "meow, meow" in a sort of squeaky tone. And thought, "Lovely". I found Goober here hiding over by the air conditioner unit. While there are a few wild cats around that no one can catch, this guy isn't afraid of anyone.

I put flea stuff on him for the ear mites and fleas. I will probably bathe him tomorrow so he'll be looking a little more presentable. Not sure what to do with him. I'll probably call the pound tomorrow, and see if they can take him. I can post his pic on petfinder in the mean time.

He's solid white, except for a gray tail. Sort of an unusual color pattern.

A Texas Justice of the Peace has awarded custody of 57 Thoroughbred and Arabian horses to the equine welfare groups that have been caring for them since the animals were seized May 9.

Hopkins County law enforcement authorities and volunteers from the True Blue Animal Rescue and the Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society seized the animals from owner Carol Paselk. Melanie DeAeth, president of True Blue Animal Rescue, said the horses were malnourished and needed veterinary and farrier care.

On Tuesday, Justice of the Peace Yvonne King ruled that the horses were neglected and that rescue groups should continue providing rehabilitative care until the horses can be placed in adoptive homes. Paselk was unavailable for comment.

No criminal charges have been filed.

TWO RESCUES, HOPKINS COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT AND SULPHUR SPRINGS POLICE DEPARTMENT WORK TOGETHER TO SEIZE 58 HORSES FROM HOPKINS COUNTY HORSE OWNER

True Blue Animal Rescue (TBAR) President Melanie DeAeth received a neglect complaint concerning Hopkins County horse owner Carol Paselk earlier this year. When she discovered the condition of the horses at the property, she contacted Jennifer Williams, Ph.D. of Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society (BEHS). DeAeth and Williams agreed that the horses appear to be neglected: they lacked proper food, access to potable water and necessary medical attention.

On Saturday, May 9, 2009, volunteers from TBAR and BEHS arrived at the owner’s property accompanied by officers from the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Department and Sulphur Springs Police Department. The officers served the owner, Carol Paselk, with a warrant to remove all horses from the property. Volunteers document 57 horses living on the property in unsanitary conditions and found one deceased horse.. All living horses were removed and relocated to safe holding facilities. They’re currently being seen by veterinarians and farriers and being started on re-feeding programs.

The case will be heard on Tuesday, May 19^th at 1:30 PM in Sulphur Springs. At that time, evidence on the horses’ condition will be presented, and the owner will have a chance to present evidence. The Justice of the Peace who presides over the case will then determine whether or not the horses were neglected. If so agrees that the horses were neglected, she can award them to the rescues to rehabilitation and eventually rehome.

Rehabilitation of the animals will take several months and cost the organizations thousands of dollars. If you would like to make a contribution to assist with the animals rehabilitation or would like to become a foster care-giver for these or other neglect case horses, please contact True Blue Animal Rescue or Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society.

Middle Eastern Salukis - A Growing Concern!

The situation with abandoned Middle Eastern Salukis grows worse. We need your help to spread the word that abandoned Salukis in the Middle East are in need of care and loving homes. To continue our work in helping them we need donations, adopters, and foster homes. By raising awareness of this increasing problem, we hope to get help from other groups and individuals internationally.

We regularly receive pleas for help from various parts of the Middle East. Julie from Doha has written to us: "I live in Doha and recently started to care for an abandoned and starving Saluki mother and her 3 surviving pups living in perilous conditions on a building site near my home. The watchman on the site told us she had been thrown from a car. As other dogs had started to join this family, the local residents were on the verge of calling the police, who would come and shoot them all (in reality, using them for target practice as those who have witnessed the spectacle say it can take a couple of hours until the injured dogs are finally cornered and killed). The manager of a local vets practice, Kim, offered to help by taking them into a spare room in her surgery as an emergency measure, a contact managed to convince the police to give us a couple of days, and we caught Momma (who is unsurprisingly timid), the 3 pups.... the boy pup sadly died shortly after rescue, Momma is now temporarily on a farm, one of the girl pups is fostered with me, one in a holding pen at the vets. However, we don't have a longer term solution for them. The local animal shelter is full to bursting and also takes in abandoned Salukis." Kim from Doha Vet inQatar writes: "I hope you will please help...this little girl saluki, 2 months old, we have taken in. She was being raised to be a hunting dog and has a minor fracture on her leg, which is already healing she can put weight on it. However, what is so appalling is the owner has decided at 8 days old all the saluki pups will have their ears cut off. He owns over 200 dogs. The ears are cut off without anesthesia, using scissors because they think it will make the dogs run faster.

This little girl needs love.....she is so sweet, please if anyone can foster or accept her into your family.I can look beyond this mutilation .....can you ????? her little eyes are filled with hope and thanks. We still have many pups, kittens, cats and dogs, our clinic is full. Thank you for all your help and support."

Meet TYSON, currently in foster care on Cape Cod, MA.

As with all the artists here at ART HELPING ANIMALS, I paint for my local rescues when the need arises. I was recently contacted by Friends of Falmouth Dogs to ask if I could paint one of their rescues to help with some funding...In this economy we can all use the help but the RESCUES are really getting hard hit.

ABOUT TYSON:

Tyson was adopted from a shelter in Maine when he was 12 weeks old. His owner moved and her new landlord would not allow a Pit Bull to be at the house. He was surrendered to the Friends of Falmouth Dogs at 11 months. Unfortunately even prior to the move, Tyson's life was unstable and he was cared for by a family acquaintance for several months before he was returned to his owner. Despite his strength, Tyson is an affectionate dog. He's eager to please and has responded well to training. Typical to many Pits, Tyson has very pink skin and is prone to skin allergies. Cold weather as well as a collar worsened the condition. He also had a recurring problem with his ear...an old wound he received as a young puppy. Periodically it would bleed, particularly when he shook his head. His skin allergy probably impacted his healing process. Over time, the stress of the kennel took it's toll and Tyson's ear bled daily (not very appealing to potential adopters). A portion of his ear was removed and stitched in an effort to promote healing. Tyson was placed in foster care in hopes of decreasing his stress level. He is doing well and is living with 4 other dogs while he waits for his forever home.

Urgent Dalmatian Help...

Despite the limited information we have about these 2 beautiful Dals, we asking EVERYONE we know for HELP.They are male & female Dalmatians, approximately 6-8 years of age, owner surrendered, heartworm negative, and both are spayed/neutered. They only have a couple of days left before their time runs out!!!!Both are currently at the Halifax Humane Society in Daytona Beach. The shelter needs to know IMMEDIATELY if someone can help, even a FOSTER would save them.
Both are in desperate need of a home, DRTB has 25 Dals under it's care and we are out of room for us to take them in. Even the kennel we've used in the past is unavailable due to a fire. If you can help the two beautiful Dals, please contact the shelter IMMEDIATELY, there is no time to waste.We also ask that you please share / cross-post this email with anyone you think might be able to help the Daytona Dals!

Thought I would post a light hearted moment for one of our ART HELPING ANIMALS supported rescues...

I recently had the pleasure of painting one of the baby beagles currently in foster care through BONES that is BEAGLES OF NEW ENGLAND STATES, one of our favorite rescues. (Percy)

They have helped hundreds of beagles, both young and old, find their forever homes. They have dedicated volunteers who embrace these fosters and teach some who have never been part of families the finer things to prepare them for homelife.

Please, Please Stop Horse Slaughter in Montana Before it Starts!

This is a call to action for everyone (It doesn't matter what state or county you live in - make your voice heard) who wants humane treatment for animals. Please email or call the Montana Legislature and tell them that you don't want Montana as the Horse Slaughter Capitol of America.

What you can do to stop Horse Slaughter in Montana:

Call the Senate Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation committee: You may leave a message for the entire committee at 444-4800. Tell them you oppose HB 418 and horse slaughter in Montana or anywhere in the U.S.

Call the Governor Schweitzer’s office: Call 444-3111 and let the governor’s office know you oppose horse slaughter in Montana. The governor has the power to veto legislation so he also needs to hear from you.

These are easy calls to make. Please take a moment and pick up the phone.

Right now the Horse Slaughter Bill has passed the Montana House of Representatives and the Senate will vote this week. Please let every Montana Senator know what you think. Be respectful but send emails and let them know that this will hurt tourism. If you are not from Montana, let the Senators know that it is unacceptable to go blue ribbon trout fishing in a river polluted by a horse slaughter plant, that is unacceptable to go to Yellowstone or Glacier Park and be in the state that has allowed a Belgian company to build a plant that will slaughter horses for meat.

Horse Slaughter plants have been economic and fiscal Drains to other states. This is not clean/green technology. Both Texas and Illinois have had horrible times with the pollutions and environmental violations from this the Belgian Horse Slaughter Plant. It took them years to shut down the plant, and now this Belgian company has convinced Montana legislators that the will bring clean jobs to Montana in their Horse Slaughter plant.

Texas and Illinois has shown us that there are highway safety, solid waste, disease control, feral animal and wildlife problems with these plants that we do not want in Montana.

There are alternative ( to slaughter) green employment options like growth in Mobile DVM's, Gelding clinics, Horse contraception with PZP ( made in Montana), Geriatric equine diet, hoof, dental care; more horse transports to non lethal destinations, equine cemeteries , horse trainers, horse massage, more sanctuaries, and all the suppliers to support these new industries. In summary with support there can be MORE and Better MT jobs if this bill is killed!!!

Just as in community animal control.... total lethal programs ( euthanasia) does not address the population problem, we need public education via NGO's, DVM's and the extension service, and a total comprehensive program.. horse slaughter just prolongs and enables the casual and backyard breeding issue.

Horse slaughter in NOT Euthanasia. It is not a humane transport, humane handling nor humane euthanasia "good death" practice.

Citizens taking their horse for rehoming at a horse sale do NOT HAVE THE OPTION to withhold their horse from going to slaughter. Many people who dearly loved their horses were stunned to find out that when they sold them at auction their beloved pets were brutally slaughtered and fed to Belgian. If you've seen a horse slaughter plant you will agree with me about the brutality of how it is handled. Nearly all the proponents suggest they do not want THIER horses to go to slaughter, but with a horse slaughter plant getting top dollar for Belgian steaks, is a most probable destination for many horses sold in Montana.

Texas and Illinois had long legal battles with foreign slaughter plants to finally shutter them... we should learn from those states and not bring an economic and environmental burden to our state.

The foreign horse plants do not pay federal taxes but consume local and state taxes!!!

Please, everyone call 406-444-4800 and oppose the Horse Slaughter Bill HB 418.

Humane Alternatives for unwanted and in-crisis horses in Montana

There are many humane options for helping unwanted and in-crisis horses in Montana. Horse slaughter is unacceptable and inhumane for many reasons. Unwanted horses are a serious issue and we must continue to expand our thinking outside of the “slaughter” box.
The unwanted horse issue is exacerbated by the current economic crisis but there have always been unwanted horses in Montana and owners who cannot afford the horses they have, thus putting these horses into the category of “in-crisis.” Horse owners who no longer want their horses face the problem of finding a new home for their animal. Horse owners who decide to euthanize a horse must pay for this service and dispose of the body. Financially strapped horse owners may face an inability to pay for feed or need to quickly find a new home for their horse.

Issue: Humane euthanasia and carcass disposal
Humane Alternatives: Euthanasia by a vet, either via injection or by gunshot. The fee in Montana for euthanasia averages from $150 – $225. Burial and removal costs vary from $25 in a county landfill to $300 in a pet cemetery. Additionally, there are backhoe operators who will bury dead horses – their fees vary. Proper disposal of a horse body is required by law and varies by county and city. For the horse owner who must euthanize their horse but cannot afford the fee, financial help is available from Montana Horse Sanctuary of Helena and Willing Servants of Hamilton.

Issue: Owner does not want to euthanize horse but rather find a new home for horse due to loss of interest in horse or financial inability to continue caring for horse
Humane Alternatives: Qualified horse sanctuary, rescue organization, veterinary clinics and individual rescuers. A wide variety of well-qualified and properly funded horse rescue operations exist in Montana. A quick search of the web or a call to a veterinarian will provide a horse owner with contacts and information. Horse rescue is a fast-growing segment of horse culture and in Montana provides humane alternatives for hundreds, if not thousands, of horses every year. Additionally, equine therapeutic programs accept horses and train them to provide therapy to people with physical, mental and emotional disabilities. Horses find homes with 4-H clubs, pony clubs and university programs. And, many horse owners sell their horses through private sale.

Long-term Solutions to the Unwanted and In-Crisis horse issue:
Education of horse owners: In many cases horses become unwanted or in-crisis because their owners are uninformed about proper care, over breeding and training. Many opportunities for on-going education about horses are available through horse sanctuaries, rescue organizations, horse clubs, the extension service, and veterinarians. For owners who want to reduce their herds to manageable levels, gelding of stallions is an affordable option. The Small Business Administration offers assistance to small business owners, including breeders, who want to investigate the profitability of their operation. Humane Society of the United States offers assistance to some horse owners who want to curtail breeding via a short-term birth control program for mares. Responsible breeders limit the number of foals they produce according to the market and build a buffer into their business budget to care for or humanely euthanize horses with disabilities or serious defects. Some large breeding ranches are now allowing outsiders to lease a mare (though she stays at the owner’s ranch the entire time), choose the stallion to breed to, then get the foal at weaning. It is this type of creativity that will change the industry in a positive and more responsible direction.

Helping horse owners in temporary financial crisis: No matter how good or bad the economy, some horse owners will at one time or another find themselves in temporary financial difficulty. These owners are encouraged to apply for hay and euthanasia grants from organizations including Montana Horse Sanctuary, Willing Servants and HSUS.

About Horse Slaughter – Fact vs. fiction

Is horse slaughter a humane death for horses?

No. A comprehensive report compiled from information received from the USDA regarding the inhumane treatment of horses slaughtered in U.S. facilities proves this is an inhumane practice and causes much suffering to the horses. This report can be viewed at www.kaufmanzoning.net.

For additional information about horses in transport to slaughter, in slaughter feedlots, and at slaughter the following sites are a wealth of information: www.awionline.org; www.vetsforequinewelfare.org; www.kaufmanzoning.net; www.animallawcoalition.com; www.animals-angels.com. These websites contain great information as well as some disturbing images which are clearly marked with a warning before you access those images.

Horse slaughter is inherently cruel. The inhumane transport and the grisly slaughter processes are well-documented. Former race horses, work horses, riding ponies, and carriage horses are purchased at regular horse auctions and crammed on double-decker trucks designed for cattle. Trucked long distances, they are subject to injuries and being trampled. Once at the plant, they throw their heads and are hard to accurately stun. In the U.S., horses were frequently improperly stunned and then hoisted and shackled, and bled out while still conscious and kicking.

Who would benefit from having a horse slaughter facility in Montana?

The Belgian-owned company which requested this legislation (House Bill 418), the “canner buyers” who purchase horses for slaughter, the livestock auction yards and the people who steal horses then sell them directly to the slaughter facility.

There is a lot of hype about a horse slaughter plant bringing tax money and jobs to Montana. Facts about the economic impact of slaughter facilities are available at www.kaufmanzoning.net. What happened in Kaufman, Texas, is a cautionary tale and we can learn from what happened there.

Have horse slaughterhouse closures in the U.S. caused horse abandonment or neglect?

No. Statistics demonstrate that horse slaughter does not alleviate neglect or cruelty. When California banned horse slaughter in 1998, it saw no rise in horse cruelty cases, but did document a 34% drop in horse theft. When the Illinois plant was non-operational for two years (March 2002 – June 2004), the Illinois Dept. of Agriculture documented a drop in horse cruelty in the state. When it reopened, the horse abuse cases went back up. A recent study released by the Animal Law Coalition (June 17, 2008) shows a decrease of abuse and neglect nationwide since the closure of U.S. slaughter facilities.

Horse slaughter has been decreasing for decades without causing abandonment. There used to be eight horse slaughter plants in the United States, processing 350,000 horses annually for human consumption abroad. In 2006, the numbers declined to three remaining plants killing 100,000 horses a year, meaning 250,000 fewer American horses were turned into dinners for Europeans. They did not end up abused or neglected either.

Are only the cheapest, sickest horses those who go to slaughter?

No. Most of the horses who go to slaughter are young and healthy – 92.3%. Horse rescue organizations report being routinely outbid by killer buyers at horse auctions in all regions of the country when they attempt to save horses. The presence of a legal horse slaughter industry is preventing horse rescue and driving up costs for horse rescue organizations.

Oreo, black & white Filly needs your Help at T-bar in Texas

This is Oreo, a three year old paint filly, that was found wandering the streets with her pasture mates. When nobody claimed her she was turned over to True Blue Animal Rescue (Tbar). She lived in a wonderful foster home with some other young horses and was doing very well. Since Oreo is a young horse she is curious so when she saw an open gate she ran out without much thought for her safety. It was getting dark and an SUV that was speeding by hit her very hard. She flew into the air and landed on the ground with a thud. Her foster owner was there and after making sure the people in the car were OK he ran to her side. Oreo got up and except for a few scrapes she looked OK too. The vet came and examined her and decided to give her some medicine and let her rest. Later, after X-raying her we found out that she had some broken bones in her knee and that she’d need surgery to make her comfortable. The only other option is euthanasia because arthritis is already setting in and it is getting harder and harder for Oreo to use her knee. We contacted surgeons at A & M vet hospital and although the surgery would cost $8000. Dr. Watkins was able to get $4000 of that funded through another foundation. Oreo is young and will do well with this surgery. After she heals she can be ridden lightly and will have a good life. The only problem is that True Blue Animal Rescue does not have the other $4000 to spend on surgery for one horse so we are asking for your help. Please donate any amount of money you can to help us pay for Oreo’s surgery. She’s too young to have her life ended this soon. She survived abuse, neglect and being hit by an SUV. Now she needs your help so she can continue living!

RECENT ADOPTIONS

We are HAPPY to list the following adoptions which have occurred during the last few weeks!

FREDDY, a golden retriever mix puppy went to his new home. He will be a companion to Stu and another lab mix dog.
Lucky Freddy will be an inside dog and getting all the attention he needs and deserves! When we called for an update on Freddy, he was sitting on the couch next to Stu and is very much loved!

Dirk, was driven to his new home on Sunday to be sure it would work out and everything seems great! He got along with their other dogs and seemed happy to be there. When we left, Dirk was safely inside the fenced area and as he gets used to his new home will be able to venture out and run and play in their large yard. When we called to see how he was adjusting we found him to be out in the yard and getting along well with the other dog and not bothering the chickens.

Husky, not only has a new home but a new name. He is now called Jake, and is loved by his new mom!

Jackson, has found his new home and we are delighted to know he is well loved and getting all the attention he deserves!

Clyde, went into his new home on Friday! Della, his foster mother, drove him to his new home in Brenham. A nice couple saw Clyde in the paper and decided to give him a try! Hooray for Clyde!

January 2008 - Registered a 1 on the Henneke Body Scoring Scale (as low as it goes)

Dolly was donated to TBAR significantly underweight. She measures a '1' on the Henneke Scale used to rate body condition. The scale goes from 1 to 9. She is the most skinny of the three, although this picture doesn't show just how emaciated she is. Even though she is just skin and bones, she is still sweet and loving. Dolly really needs her teeth floated (filed) to help her eat better, but she is so skinny, she can't handle the sedation required. Captain, Dolly and Blanca were all rideable, kid-broke, gentle horses before being neglected. Although at 30 years old, Dolly deserves retirement.

April 2008 - Gaining weight but still a long way to go

Update: April 14, 2008: Dolly has put on a lot of weight and her winter coat is shedding out in chunks! She finally put on enough weight to be able to handle the sedation to get her teeth floated. You can see how skinny she still is in her new photo; and that's after 2.5 months of proper food. Thanks to your support, Dolly and her companions are getting the care and feed they need to get back to health! She still has a ways to go, but she's on her way!

Art Helping Animals members were thrilled to learn that their donations to the HSUS NRRO AHAT fund purchased the fencing, doors, and hardware needed to house 180 dogs that were rescued from a Montana puppy mill.

The Northern Regional Rockies Region has a special fund for Art Helping Animals Donations . The fund is used for food and equipment for rescues in an eight state area.

TBAR TALK - December News

SHARING OUR MANY BLESSINGS AT T-BAR

We are most happy to show this picture of Popeye with his new mom, Nicki. Popeye had been shot in his head and beaten with a golf club and here he is in downtown Brenham checking out the "imitation" snow flakes during a Christmas Stroll with Nicki . He has a great life with his wonderful new mom.

George and Buster were picked up on Saturday by Hal McElwain to become the first horses for his 6 year old grandsons. They traveled well and arrived safely at their new home. The twins have been riding them already and are thrilled with their gift. We too are thrilled with a perfect match for these two beautiful horses.

T-BAR has recently picked up Ginger and Tattoo . Ginger is an older horse in her 20's who will need daily medication and care to treat an infection and keep her wounds clean. She would have gone to slaughter had she been sold on the open market or in auction but now has a home in T-Bar's rehab. Tattoo, a nice and friendly horse who is broke to ride and has great ground manners is Ginger's pasture mate and good friend. He is very attached to Ginger too and for now will be listed in rehab with her until her wounds heal. They then will be listed for adoption as a pair. Here is a recent picture, Tattoo is on the left:

Riverdancer has been adopted by Kelly Kurtz. She will be her daughter's pony and will have a great life! They will ride often and enter play days so this sweet pony will be used and loved alot!

PEARL is safe! Senior Dal gets a new home.

We just want to let everyone know that a new home came through for Pearl who has been renamed Palin.
Thank-you to all that responded on her behalf.
Here is a bit of what Teri in Winter Park, her new mom, told us about her new life in her new home:
Here is Palin, sitting by me as I work in my office, which is upstairs. She climbed the stairs for the first time this morning. She is relaxed, in the middle of retraining [leash training and potty training]. And she seems very happy and gaining confidence as the hours progress. Thank you to all who volunteer with the Rescue Group. It is amazing work that you do and Palin is an example of giving a great dog a second / or even third chance at a good life. She is a wonderful new "forever" pet.

Hopefully by week's end she will have gained enough confidence to not be a Velcro dog at my knee. That is the goal. She has a lot to learn. Not leash trained, not fully potty trained and a very proud, dignified young lady...she is amazing. And as we start off our little journey the three of us...Chili (their other dog) is really animated....and alert...I love seeing her like this...my old dog is coming back to life as well.

PEARL is in desperate need! Her owner just died and with it went the promise of a forever home.

DALMATIAN RESCUE OF TAMPA BAY...

is trying to keep her from being turned in at animal control before this WEDNESDAY where her chances of finding another home will be poor to none.

She is about 9 or 10 years old and looks to be in really good shape & good health. When she was first rescued she was quite thin, but has recovered.

She seems to favor men over women, but appears adaptable enough to bond with a woman. She is good with other dogs too.
If there is anything you can do to help PEARL, be it a home or a FOSTER, then PLEASE contact us. DRTB has been inundated with dogs and are at capacity without someone coming forward to help so we are sending out this urgent plea on her behalf.

HALLOWEEN SAFETY REMINDER

Pumpkins, Ghosts and Gobblins...
oh my!

Just a friendly reminder to keep your pets safe from harm at this Halloween season of festivities...

The frequent ringing of the doorbell with little gobblins Trick or Treating, the mounds of candy that they can get into if left to their own devices....
these are things that can cause stress and even harm if we forget that our pets rely on us to keep them safe.

Be careful...be safe...watch that they don't scoot out the front door when you are dropping those goodies in the treat bags, don't EVER let your dog eat CHOCOLATE it is POISON TO THEM!
If they get into the candy...get in touch with your VET EMERGENCY clinic for medical advice.
If your pet is not used to greeting strangers at your front door it may cause stress and anxiety so just keep them out of harm's way and protect the little gobblins too.

Enjoy the fun of Halloween and keep safety first in your plans.

Tbar Helps after Hurricane Ike

When the members of True Blue Animal Rescue heard about the devastation in Houston after Hurricane Ike came through the area they asked people to donate items and bring them to Parcel Plus in Brenham, Texas. Monetary donations were used to purchase more feed and supplies for the animals. Thanks to the generous response by caring people True Blue Animal Rescue Volunteers were able to bring a trailer and pick up truck load of dog food, cat food, horse feed and other supplies to the Houston SPCA on September 19th. We were met by volunteer coordinator Tim Raeke and other grateful people who helped us unload this bounty onto pallets so it could be handed out to people who were going back out to locations where animals are being cared for or given to foster homes picking up homeless animals or fed to the 100s of animals coming into the SPCA that have been displaced by Hurricane Ike. They were very happy to see such a large donation of supplies coming to them from Brenham, TX and we were glad to bring it.

Upon our return to Brenham we loaded up two trailers full of hay and used donated money to purchase 20 bags of horse feed so we could help the large animals that had no hay after Hurricane Ike ravaged the area and left the fields wet and mucky in it's wake. On Sept. 21st we went to Anahuac, TX, west of Beaumont and found that they had just received a load of hay and bags of feed that day. The only things they needed from our load was the water trough from Kaleigh and a large bag of cat litter that had been don ated. We were happy to see that some people had already brought the much needed supplies to this park where small animals were being kept until their owners could come for them.

The next place on our route was Fannett, a town 30 miles closer to Beaumont. We were directed to the Labelle-Fannett Fire Dept., a local Point of Distribution or POD, where people were lined up in their cars to pick up water, i ce and MREs. The supplies were passed out to the lines of cars that drove up non stop while we were there. When we came in with hay their faces lit up and they gratefully accepted all of what we brought. The dog food and cat food was placed in the distribution line and passed out to people as they drove through. Meanwhile the ranchers had been called to tell them about the hay and feed we brought with us. The 120 square bales of hay we brought never touched the ground. It went right from our trailer onto the trailers of those who were desperate to feed their starving cattle and horses.

We were met with glad faces, pats on the back and even some hugs. Half of our lo ad was split between three ranchers along with some of the 20 bags of feed that we brought. We drove the other 60 bales to a grateful rancher who was overjoyed to see food for his starving cows and all the other displaced cows that had wandered onto his property looking for food and water. The rancher and his teary eyed wife were relieved to see us there with help for their animals. They spoke of the horror of watching the cattle go crazy near the coast from drinking salt water. They said that the cows were running in the streets and charging the people who were trying to help them. Others told stories of the horses who were left tied and ended up jowl deep in water with their necks straining as they concentrated on keeping their noses above water.
"We cut 'em loose and let 'em find high ground. That's all we could do before we went in to rescue more of the stranded people" was what one of the Firemen said with a horrified look on his face. "We help the people first but our animals are like family to us so we had to help them too. Thank you for coming and thank you for caring."

The sentiment was the same with everyone we encountered and as we drove away they continued to thank us but the looks on t heir faces was thanks enough. You could see that they felt good knowing that people they never met before from Brenham, TX cared enough to drive three hours to where they were to help them feed their animals. We gave them hope with our little caravan of feed. Their animals will have full bellies tonight and their owners will sleep just a little better knowing that.

The support we brought to these people was only the tip of the iceberg for them and their animals. It will be months before their lives are back to normal. They will continue to need our help and support and the help of everyone who has the means and the time to do whatever they can to help. True Blue Animal Rescue will be working on getting more help to others that have been hurt by Hurricane Ike. Thank you all for your donations, support and well wishes. Without you, we wouldn't be able to help these people and the animals who mean everything to them.

HOW TO HELP THE ANIMALS IN TEXAS DISPLACED BY IKE!

True Blue Animal Rescue is making plans to help the animals that were effected by Hurricane Ike and we need your help! Hurricane Ike left a site of mass destruction in Galveston and surrounding areas this past weekend. Galveston and surrounding towns have been devistated by the surging waters that crashed ashore Sept. 13. This area and much of Houston will be without power for up to a month That's millions of people without power to care for themselves or their pets. We have plans to support all of those effected by this hurricane which currently includes over 550 livestock and 1200 small animals as reported by the Texas Animal Health Commission. This does not include persons sheltering their pets in temporary housing, or individuals providing sheltering space for animals. These are the first totals that have been reported so we expect that number to grow as the rescue efforts continue. The rescued animals and the animals in temporary shelters with their owners all need food and water right away so we are planning to bring in a truck load of donations to them this coming weekend, Sept.19.

We know that FEMA is out there helping all the people so we have started collecting items for the animals. The Texas Agrilife Extension, Texas Dept. of Agriculture and Livestock industry groups who have established "Operation No Fences: Hurricane Ike Horse and Cattle Relief" are asking for feed, hay and water troughs to provide the livestock with safe feed and water. We plan to bring all items donated directly to the animals in the Houston area. We would also like to bring some of the many items needed to the small animal population as well.

Lighten Up!

Fall is on the way and FALL CLEANING may be on your agenda. It is a self-defense exercise in our house!
It is a great time to "Lighten Up" and declutter your closets and home. You may be planning on getting new bedding to spruce up the bedrooms.
Before you decide what to do with the old quilts or bed spreads here is an idea that takes just a little time but may make a great shelter gift for your local rescue.

Simple straight line sewing...nothing difficult or fancy about this project.
I took the old quilt that was clean and in good repair and cut out several pieces that would make 2 large, 2 medium and 2 small pet beds. I cut the same sizes of fleece material*, placed the "right" sides together, and using my little portable sewing machine, I sewed almost all the way around leaving about 8 inches open to be able to put my hand inside and reverse the fabric.

The next step was simply to sew up the opening and a nice thick pet blanket or bed was ready to make the shelter pet (or your own, for that matter, if you make an extra one to keep!) comfortable as they wait for their forever home!

You have recycled and made a neat donation for the rescue. They are easy to wash and when their service is done they can be discarded.

* A note about the fleece: I bought it on sale....but I also have found VERY inexpensive fleece "throws" at our local Christmas Tree Shop that will be used for the next batch. I have a few of these older quilts that are taking up space in the closet and will use them in the future for pet beds for another shelter in my town.

Another shelter gift you might consider is recycling your pets toys if you have more than they actually play with.
My spoiled dalmatian Lizzie has many "like new" toys that are headed to the rescue with the quilts. She has her favorites that keep her interested in play but other animals will get to enjoy the excess toys and we get a neater toy corner in the living room. I just fluffed them up in the drier with clean damp face clothes to remove the dust and they are as good as new.

Think creatively and help your local rescues with needed items and the spirit of giving will Lighten Up your whole mood as we move into Fall!

Dave had an interesting rescue in his own backyard. Here's the update. I love happy endings.

Yellowstone County: Montana:

Filed by Dave Pauli at 00:45 hours Monday 8/18/08

Situation: Entrapped individual dog.

At 19:10 on Sunday, 8/17/08 the Pauli Family was alerted by a faint but constant "yipping" sound coming from about 1/2 of a mile away from our backyard up in the Rimrock cliffs.

An assessment team of Dave, Katie and Maggie Pauli hiked up in the rimrocks to ascertain if the pitiful whining was from an injured coyote or some other canine. After some searching and exploration we finally narrowed the noise down to a large sandstone boulder pile. Each boulder was several tons and the cross connection of several of them created habitat for marmots and cottontails.

We had brought ropes, lights, pet food and water and were able to find the dog that apparently had chased something into the mess but could not either back out or come forward. We could see his head almost to his ear crest and the girls identified him as a new 6 month old neighbors dog name Issy.

Issy was in a bad spot. Maggie hiked over to see if the owners were home ( they were not) and to see if she could get a phone number for the land owner ( Rep Denny Rehbergs sister). It was now dark and we managed to get two other neighbors on scene.

Initial assessment showed unsafe conditions, no property owner permission and no owner permission. So we feed and watered the dog and she readily drank and ate the few morsel we offered her. I suggested we regroup in the morning. Just then at about 21:05 the owner drove in his driveway and we hiked over to get him involved. He was most thankful...but did not want to wait to morning.

I advised we need landowner permission three bottle jacks, some timbers and other safety gear to even attempt a rescue and that I was going to see if the Molt Volunteer Fire Department would take this on as an extraction exercise tomorrow. He said he had three bottle jacks, spud bars, mauls and he knew I had the lights and safety equipment to get the extraction done. I then called the property owner and they gave us full access to do whatever was necessary to save the dog. I also called another nearby neighbor on the fire department in case we needed additional supplies.

When the three adults, (myself, the neighbor and the dog owner) hiked back to the boulders. ( you cannot drive within 800 yards of the place because of floodplain)... I established incident command with me as IC and the volunteer firefighter as safety officer.

By 22:30 we had installed bottle jacks and timber supports to insure that the boulders could not shift or crush the dog. I then discarded any of the options of crawling under the boulders to attach a leash or to lubricate the dog ( crisco her) because even with bracing sandstone is dangerous material.

The three of us then began the frustrating process of nipping away at the small sandstone opening where the dogs head would come out. The process was complicated because we could only gain access with our left arms/hands and the sandstone was harder and more dense than we thought it would be. We each did five minute shifts of chipping and rotated about three times when we stopped to see if Izzy would fit through the hole. She could now get her head and one leg mostly through...but could not get out. But our adrenaline and focus was renewed because we now knew that though we chose the safest and most slow method it would eventually work.

After another 4 shifts of digging, the whole was looking massive compared to the tiny hole she could get her head through....and as soon as we stopped digging Izzy charged forward... clawed a little at the whole and then BURST through to freedom. Mission Accomplished!

Summary: Owner is going to start Kenneling his pup on the property. I will send landowner a report.
We successfully applied IC and Safety protocols to do a night operations event, on a record hot evening (97 degrees) and I think recruited two new members for our local animal response team.

A long, hot, and potential dangerous night operation was successfully completed and the dog was rescued approximately five hours and three equipment hike-ins later. The only injured sustained was post rescue when I was packing up all my equipment a slid on some loose shale into an old dead yucca plant ... and I would rather tangle with a porcupine any day.

Value the of the Hug

Yesterday there was a touching article in my local paper about a dog named Shannon who was adopted and became the most beloved family pet.

As I read this piece I realized it was an eulogy to this animal. The story was about how this, at first, unwanted pet turned into a life force that spanned 15 years of a family's journey along with all their ups and downs of family experiences.

It mentioned how the unconditional love was so valued as the steady constant in the family during some tough times.
In the end, it was time to let this dog go to her final rest with love and dignity...
that "Something" that none of us wants to face ...but that all of us who know the value of their true companionship, finds so heart wrenching to experience.

The great joys of true love have the great cost of letting them go when the time comes.

After I read the article I needed to hug my Lizzie who was laying beside me snoozing. Her 10th birthday is Sunday. I wish we could stop time but because we cannot it is better to consciously enjoy the time we are given ...and hugs and kisses should be liberally taken advantage of.

Shannon is at the Bridge, I am sure, enjoying her prime again. Perhaps when they are ready her family will embrace a new adoption with the love they still have to give a wonderful companion.
It becomes a nice tribute to the one that has gone ahead to wait at the Bridge.

Go hug your dog! Let them hug you back. We can't have too many hugs.

TBAR saves Tuscany, a horse rescue

Sadly for every animal that gets adopted there are several waiting to come into True Blue Animal Rescue. Here is a picture of Tuscany. We named him that because we know he will live up to the name when he fills out and becomes the beautiful horse he once was. He's in his early 20's which means he is not extremely old for a horse. Today horses live well into their 30's. There is no reason for this guy to be this thin except that he didn't have enough food. When Dale and I went out to see him after a phone call from the owner telling us that she can't afford to feed him and begging us to take him we were stunned by what we saw. There was some poor quality grain but no hay for this guy to eat but his eyes were bright and he looked at us with hope. Enough said, so we went back and picked up the trailer and took him home. He's eating senior feed four times a day with plenty of hay so we expect him to come around and start gaining weight quickly.

This is only one of many horses that we helped in 2008 alone and with the increasing cost of feed for animals we expect that number to grow over the next several months. Once we get the weight on them the cost of maintaining their weight isn't as much so they become adoptable. Until that time the amount of feed we'll have to feed a horse like Tuscany is staggering. What a Difference a little TLC makes!

Blanca went to her new home today. She was taken in by True Blue Animal Rescue when her owner could not properly care for her.

She was skinny, needed vet care and lots of senior feed.

Now she will have a girl of her own and will be able to teach Kelly Ann how to trust and safely ride horses.

HELP! Rescue populations are on the rise....

The economy is forcing many pet owners to turn their beloved pets into rescues across the country as the fight to stay in their homes and apartments is becoming tougher each day.

We have a little way to go before things turn around for us in this global village we live in. We can do anything together and make great strides when we put our priorities into perspective and work for the good of all.

The rescues and especially the NO KILL rescues are needing everyone's support more than ever before. Most of them survive on donations to just keep going. They pull animals out of KILL shelters everyday to save a life. They foster the Old Ones...they keep them safe and loved for the rest of their days. TBAR Happenings

Say "hello" to Blue. This sweet young hound was found wandering in the country, limping and very skinny. He was picked up, taken to the vet and it was found that he had a high break in one of his hind legs, most likely having been hit by a car. After weeks of mending, the cast is off and he can put on some weight to be ready for adoption. Spay/Neuter

Did you know that 80% of dogs hit by cars are unneutered males? It's sad, but true, and one of the many reasons that all pets should be spayed or neutered. This past spring (March - April), TBAR offered a Spay/Neuter Rebate and was very successful in getting many of the area pets spayed or neutered.

SUCCESS STORIES

Recent Events ~

Over the past couple of months, TBAR has had some successful events and raised some much needed money to pay for the vet and feed bills of the TBAR animals.

Country Flavors Festival in Downtown Brenham - thanks to the many volunteers who showed up to help and to the nieces and nephews of Kathryn Turnbull who raised over $400 with their money jars, asking people in the crowd to help the animals.

July 4th at Fireman's Park - thanks to Ann, Teresa, Lauren, John, and Milly, Elizabeth, Melanie, Kathryn, and Laura Gomes for manning this event. It was a very successful fundraising day for TBAR. We also had a TBAR celebrity present - the recently adopted Popeye, who won the Best Dog contest.

Brenham Hospice - recently had a food drive for TBAR to keep our animals fed.

Eastern Montana Habitat for Hounds

Rescues with Dave's Daughters Helping:

Hello my animal artist friends... Where in the world have I been?

Well most my travels have been in Eastern Montana laying the groundwork for an exciting Habitat for Hounds project in August with the Eastern Montana Humane Society in Baker. The EMHS attempted to build a humane society building there last fall but ran out of funding, and energy before the project could be completed. The frame above has been sitting idle for months. My visit is jump starting the event to have a community ole fashioned barn raising in August to finish this building and get it ready to accept animals from around Eastern Montana. This will be the only Humane Society in the entire South Eastern portion of Montana.

There is much planning and networking to be done. The HSUS innovations section is offering a grant to help pay for the concrete work , utilities, extra floor drains for a total cash donation of about 12K. We are asking a state animal welfare group to issue a challenge grant and if they do... we should be locally able to raise the funds needed to give this community a modest but effective humane society. A few days ago the EMHS came to Billings to pick up my emergency animal shelter trailer to set up temporary housing for the animals already in their care. So we really are hoping everything comes together to push this project along the right path.

After Baker I kept going east to Dickinson and Bismarck ND where i met with an official of the Fair Chase hunting movement who are trying to pass a ballot initiative to ban "canned hunting" practices in North Dakota. This is where ranchers or elk farmers put animals into small enclosures and those with more money than ethics can pay four or five thousand to shoot the tame elk, deer, zebra or exotic goat when the animal is not wild or cannot escape. We helped pass a ban on this egregious practice in Montana in 2005 and are supporting similar goals in Idaho and Colorado. There is a strong agricultural and personal property rights lobby that is trying to derail the publics opportunity to decide if they want this unethical form of trophy shooting ( note not using hunting) in their state. The signatures have to be in by the end of July so I stopped at shelters and activists homes along the way to encourage them to support the ballot initiative.

Ahhhh but it is also spring...so when I travel my menagerie of orphaned and rehab critter care fall to my lovely bride of 19 years and my two daughters. Here Maggie, my eldest at 16, is helping to care for one of the many raccoons and other critters that pass through the Pauli home. This spring, so far we have handled or rescued, five raccoons, one fox with broken elbow, on Raven, more than Forty entrapped ducks and duckling (most are rescued and released immediately), one nighthawk ( a bird in the Whipper Will family), and a half dozen rattle or other native snakes. As we close in on July...we are hoping things slow down... but the first two weeks with fireworks, activity in the wild...we always see an increase of "orphaned baby everything's"

In my next Blog entry I will tell you about some exciting upcoming projects building fences for Prairie Dogs in South Dakota, Live-trapping Badgers and Wolverines for research projects, and my upcoming trip to D.C. for the Taking Action for Animals conference and to visit the infamous and not approved Pony Penning Days at Chincoteague Island , VA.

UPDATE ~ This just in! Stone is saved!

Susan (director for DAL RESCUE TAMPA BAY) sent the word that STONE was rescued...

"We got him out of the shelter this morning. He's at a vet's office right now being given a thorough exam.
He was apparently filthy, covered with fleas and has been chewing his back leg raw. He's a little on the timid side right now but very sweet.
A little thin also but that will be taken care of soon.
He'll be transported to [volunteer]Sherry tomorrow, then neutered, then hopefully into a good home!"

Now the work begins to rehab and rehome a pet that only knew one family but will soon find his forever place in the hearts of those who will love him till the end!

Another note...yesterday, the same day DRTB got the call about Stone, they pulled 2 Dals in VERY dire need from a kill shelter with one day left before their time was out. The pics are not suitable for posting but their lives mattered and now they are in safe hands too!

Not only do they rescue Dalmatians from the streets and kill-shelters of Tampa Bay and surrounding areas they also have a full house of Senior Dals who live out their lives in a loving home until they cross the BRIDGE. You can read the stories there too. This is an all volunteer group who rescue and rehab in foster homes. It takes a lot of hands and huge hearts to do the work.

We need your HELP saving this beautiful male Dal named STONE. He is a black and white Dalmatian who is about 9 years old. Stone was dumped at the shelter June 07, 2008 because his family decided he was too large a pet despite owning him his entire life!!!!

Stone is heartworm negative, will be neutered, & brought up-to-date on his shots. He is nervous having lost the only home he ever knew, but is now warming up to the shelter staff. His owner said he was good with children, dogs, & cats plus he is housebroken. He would be a wonderful dog for some lucky family.
We are in desperate need of a place for this boy to go and are asking anyone that can help to please contact us ASAP... he only has a few days left.

Where in the world is Dave Pauli?

"Well I have recovered from my trip to the Philippines. Recovered physically that is. Since returning mid-May I have been to HSUS EXPO in Florida, on three day trips, a two day Wolverine meeting and tomorrow leave for a week in California for the National Conference on Animals in Disasters.

While there I am doing a workshop on Animal Hoarders. So let me start this Blog with a light-hearted question? What do you call a person who continues to hoard animals repeatedly?????

Why a Cereal Hoarder of course!!!

So while the topic is serious... this little staged photo is part of my workshop that I am giving with my past NRRO teammate Colin Berry. Our workshop will be offering some new DVD's ( HSUS Hoarding Task Force) and some custom made forms for agency to help figure out how to handle hoarders. It should be fun and educational.

SO it is spring and the calls for orphaned wildlife are starting to come in... In the few days that I have actually been in Billings... I have been called out to rescue 9 ducks, One pigeon that flew into a window, one injured Nighthawk (member of the Whiperwill family), and this morning a infant rattlesnake. Most of these situations actually needed some intervention because we learned over the phone that of injuries or potential dangers IF the animals were not rescued. BUT in most wildlife interactions in spring time the mother animal is nearby watching the situation and humans actually steal their babies. So we promote a concept called IF YOU CARE --- Leave them there. Sort of a tough love for baby wildlife.

My species of the week however is Wolverines. I spend a day Friday with a half dozen of the worlds best wolverine biologists from Yellowstone Park, Glacier Park, Alaska and Canada. This crew has seen, trapped, radio collared and handled more wolverines that most people know exist. ( there are only about 500 left in the lower 48 states...and you may soon be hearing about a drive to get them listed as an endangered species. I will be hosting and sponsoring a workshop in Billings this fall to help reach that goal and to bring zoos and educators together to help get the word out.

I will close with another picture from the Philippines. I will be in the field the next few weeks on Disaster Training...then an old fashioned barn raising of an animal shelter in Eastern Montana, and then for a fencing project for prairie dogs in South Dakota. Eden is about 6 years old from Collier County.

She is very thin, a high heartworm positive that needs treatment ASAP, and her nails were so long that a dewclaw had grown a 1/4" into her pad.

She also may be deaf since she sleeps like the dead... not even making coffee in the morning will stir her.

I think she may have once been a house pet since someone cared enough to get her spayed, but then was turned outside & became a stray.

She definitely prefers to be in the house.

She is a beautiful girl with intelligent eyes and interested in the world around her.

She has begun to play with stuffed toys.

She loves people and seems to behave well with other dogs (doesn't like mine & that might be that she has no status here).

She likes to see the outside kitties run, but is good on a leash.

She tries to tell you she needs to go out to potty, but I think being at the shelter taught her that might not happen.

She still hasn't fully settled into her new surroundings & is a bit nervous, but she would be great in a home of her own.

She leans against me when I'm with her to make sure she doesn't get left behind.

She loves going for a car ride & is so good in the car... I took her to McD's for a treat.

She will be a devoted dog for the right person who could love this beautiful girl.

Blue with a Broken Leg needs help at T-bar

Blue is a beautiful young Heeler who was abandoned and starving. Worse yet he had been hit by a car, and his leg was broken. Enter True Blue Animal Rescue. Now Blue is at T-bar (short for True Blue Animal Rescue). He's splinted and casted and healing well, but the vet bill to date is $600 to set the leg. Poor baby! Who could say no to Blue? Meet...PENNY

Willing Hearts...where Angels do their work on the front lines of rescue.

What the shelter staff said about Penny:
Penny is a sweet senior girl that was brought in by the dog warden. She's good with other dogs and seems to be housebroken. We took her to the vet and she's got a hematoma on one ear that was apparently ignored by the previous owner and is now in bad shape. We've got her on steroids and antibiotics at this time and we are seeking foster care or assistance in placing her because she is such a sweetheart and we don't want to put her down without giving her a chance.

MERLIN
Merlin is an already neutered 6-10 year old male Dalmatian. Poor Merlin was surrendered to the shelter by his owner because they were moving. Merlin is a well behaved boy who is a little cautious and shy in the noisy, stressful shelter, but is very friendly and handsome. He has some dermatitis on his back end that could use a bath and treatment, but otherwise is in good shape. Merlin is now in a foster home.
Here's what his foster Mommy had to say:
Hi All,Just a quick update.Merlin is very shy and scared. He is very sick with kennel cough. He has A LOT of mucus discharge green and yellow. He is very sad. I have him downstairs to give him some peace and quite. He lets me give him meds. He hasn't eaten but will drink. He has found his comfy place on the sofa and watches TV and naps. He is housebroken and WILL be wonderful when he is feeling better. Poor guy. Not a big fan of letting me wipe his nose but deals with it. I've been spraying his back end with Sterilox to help the dermatistis and he seem comfortable. I'll send another update with his progess in a few days..D...
Update 5/15/08:
Hi All,Quick update on the Merlin Man!He is feeling MUCH better. No more doggie snot and very little coughing! He came upstairs yesterday and does well with my other guys! Although he thinks my smaller guys are toys and wants to play with them! He is a sweet boy but needs to know his place. He is doing well and slept in bed last night. Once he settled down he was fine the rest of the night. He's a typical dal has to be touching you! LOL So he is well on his way to a full recovery. He's stubborn, but what dal isn't? LOLHe's a great boy!

We haven't heard from Dave in a while... that's because he's been very busy travelling for the animals. Here are some photos he sent and some information about people in another corner of the world who are working to help animals.

Sandra... Sorry for a delayed report...but for the past two weeks I have been in the Republic of the Philippines teaching classes and field demonstrations. I got back last night and leave tomorrow for a week in Florida at Animal Care EXPO...so am going to give you a teaser with some photographs.

In summary, I was one-half of a two person team selected by Humane Society International to go over to help the Philippines Animal Welfare Coalition, its Department of Agriculture, and it Veterinary Medical Association to develop plans and events to combat the over 350 annual HUMAN deaths from rabies.

We also lectured on disaster preparedness, early spay neuter procedures and a variety of topics from capture to humane education and public relations. It was a long hot, humid trip...but well worth every moment. I will add some text to the story in the coming days...but for now here a six shot summary of the places, critters and issues I worked on with my team partner Dr Barry Kellogg of Florida.

Please do not let this sampling of photographs form your opinion of the Filipino people. They were excellent hosts and are making true efforts to introduce progressive and modern animal welfare concepts and protocols. One city veterinarian listened to my talk on public image and humane education and announced immediately after the presentation that she was changing her "dog catchers" job description to "dog control officer" and that she would ask the mayor to rename the City Pound to the City Animal Shelter. From decades of personal experience I know that these changes are MUCH MORE than semantics, and am gratified to play even a minute role in helping this great culture to improve both its public health and animal welfare status. Their goal is to Rabies Free by 2020 and from the determination I saw from these the NGO's (non government organizations), the veterinarians and the Agriculture Department... I have no doubt they will make that goal and improve conditions for animals all the way along.

True Blue's Storybook--

True Blue was born on a horse ranch in Texas. The ranch bred a special color of blue horses. Some people call them blue roans, and some call them gray roans. The term "roan" is a type of color in which white hairs are mixed in with the base coat. True Blue did not have any of the white hairs in his coat, so instead of the usual roan coloring he was all blue with a white mane and tail.

His owner was very upset about his color and kept telling him, "If you don’t change colors when you shed out this spring you’re going to the auction!"

Here is the latest from Dave Pauli, Director of the The Humane Society of of the US Northern Regional Rockies Office

"Hello artist friends: I have been spending my last two weeks glued to my computers. With a few short day trips thrown in. Primarily I have been working on upcoming trips to the Philippines; Denver; Sacramento; DC and Florida. So much to do... so little time.

But first a response to one of your members (Hi Carol) who asked if i was working on any starving horse issues.

And that is a definite YES. Most recently this week I have been working on two large horse herds in Montana. Both herds contain between 100 and 200 horses, and both herds have had some horses die, allegedly from starvation. We have had conversations with one herd owner who is being very cooperative and is both trying to downsize his herd and also to employ some birth control measures. The other herd situation just broke yesterday so we are still gathering information.

On April 11-13 we will be co teaching a horse cruelty workshop in Helena, MT with students coming from four states. As of yesterday about 40 people were signed up to learn about horse care and body scoring and investigation. I will be taking our equine rescue trailer up there along with our equine rescue equipment ( a glide and two slip sheets) that we purchased partially with donations from the AHAT fund you folks donate to!
This equipment will allow us to move downed large animals and to do ice rescues or mud rescues on livestock. Then on April 16-19 we will be back in SD darting those 125 sanctuary horses to contracept them and take the ease of high hay costs and too many foals away from the sanctuary.Add to that another half dozen small horse situations and complaints and we have indeed been spending a lot of time on Equine Issues.

And though we are nearing the end of most of the legislative sessions... I still have active bills in AK (felony cruelty and animal fighting) and CO (farm animal protection) that both have passed one chamber but now have hearings in the opposite chamber. If we win on these two bills we will have had a record session with fourteen major bills won ( including two bad bills defeated) --- a quite spectacular YEAR!

I also just shipped my equipment to Manilla, Philippines this week. I will be there April 28 - May 8th doing a " train the trainer " event with animal control officers and veterinarians. I will be teaching in the field capture methods and examining their current protocols. I am trying to give them alternatives to some of the bad techniques that they recognize they might be using. It will be some intense and challenging days... but also worth it because I know it will positively impact the way much of this country will handle their stray dogs.

The rest of my close travel will be to give disaster training(CA) or legislative lobby training (FL) and then beginning a crazy travel period from April 8 to August 8..... neither you nor I will really know where I will rest my head at night..as I will be spending equal time living out of my truck and airports. But it will mostly be hands on animal projects which i will enjoy much more that the months of legislative travel and emailing that I am close to surviving for yet another year.

Like Carol's question about horses... feel free to fire me questions about specific issues, or species or concerns. For example , I have been spending a lot of time on Yellowstone Bison the past two months but have not even mentioned it in this Blog. This is because there is no good news to report. Every effort to protect bison, require humane handling or other wise improve the situation has failed. It is depressing , yet realistic that we lose routinely on some issues like Bison and Wolves. But the battles are just part of the journey and I am happy to write about our efforts IF I hear from you that there is interest.

So for now...you keep doing what you are doing and I will keep trying to report on where my animal passions take me. May spring time bring you the opportunity to enjoy nature at its finest. Two parting thoughts...
If you hear of people who see baby wildlife that they think is orphaned... tell them to wait and watch...mama is probably nearby and will come claim the fledgling, fawn, bunny or baby. We say IF You Care ---Leave Them There ! ( unless it is obvious the baby is hurt, ill kempt or in the jaws of a predator) And remember "Animals in Disasters --- Don't Leave Home Without Them!!! Puppies found, 10 little lives saved ~

A couple of weeks ago, a good samaritan was driving down a Washington Co. road when she found 2 boxes, taped closed, on the side of the road. She stopped, opened them up and found a total of 10 adorable puppies inside. She put them in her car, took them home, and contacted TBAR. Two of our officers agreed to foster these cuties and now they are all safe, vaccinated, and well cared for. You can see these cuties on TBAR's puppy page. GREAT news, we have already placed 2 of them, and there is an adoption pending on another.

Texas A&M is looking for a new Reveille ~
As you may have already read, in an email that I sent out a few days ago, Reveille is retiring and Texas A&M is looking for a new dog. They would like to go back to their roots of having a rescue or shelter dog as the next Reveille. TBAR has corresponded with the University and has offered a couple of our "box puppies" (see above) for their consideration. Butter is a cutie that looks a lot like a collie, and Creampuff is one of her adorable sisters. We are keeping our fingers crossed that they accept TBAR's donation for this honor.

Phaser gets a new foster home ~
Long time TBAR dog and shy-guy, Phaser, went to a new foster home recently to get some special one-on-one attention. Kathy Frazier, a new TBAR member, contacted Melanie to let her know that she would love to foster one of our shy dogs to help socialize them to be more adoptable. What a blessing! It's baby steps, but Phaser seems to be doing well. Thank you Kathy!!

Choose Your Favorite Woodburned Animal Cedar Sign

TRWC has out-grown its current building and is building a new 1,440 SF Center on the same property. Last year, with over 500 animals coming in, we were terribly crowded in our 300 SF room. The new Center has separate rooms for the birds and mammals, a food prep area and an indoor bathroom for the volunteers (yeah!).

But we need your help!
Our budget for the new building is $60,000. We currently have only 1/2 to allocate to the
building and still be able to feed & care for the 2008 animals.

Please help us by purchasing a 6” x 12” engraved, hand woodburned, permanently sealed cedar sign to be installed on our outside “animal wall”. Two local woodburners are donating their services to hand burn your sign with the animal that you choose from the list below.

Wild Goose Shatters Patrol Car's Windshield
-Bird survives crash and is recovering at Wildlife Center

Salem police Officer Jeff Keniston was headed to assist another officer on State Street late Friday night when it came out of nowhere.
"I didn't even see it. There was just a loud thud and the windshield just shattered," Keniston said.
Keniston thought he had hit a pedestrian at 50 mph — a crater of cracked glass covered the passenger side of his patrol car.
But when Keniston swerved to a stop, he saw a bystander crouched on the side of the road — with a dazed goose in her arms.
The wild goose had hit the windshield, flown up into the air and landed next to the bystander, said Keniston.
The goose was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic, and then to Turtle Ridge Wildlife Center in South Salem. Wildlife rehabilitator Mary Bliss said the goose initially refused to eat but then began feeding after 12 hours.
On Monday, Bliss judged that the goose was well enough to try out a pond on their South Salem property, so she let him out of their enclosure.
Bliss said the bird was a Western Canada goose, which stays in the area year-long and is bigger than a migratory goose. She speculated the bird was a gander, because it weighed about 11 pounds and had a wingspan of about one yard.
Bliss said their rehabilitation center often cares for injured birds that hit windshields or utility lines, particularly owls or crows.
Keniston said the goose incident was a first for him after 10 years in law enforcement.
"Occasionally, you hit the night rodent or the possum, but I've never experienced anything like this before."

Emmi the Radio Cat - hyperthyroid cat info.

Emmi our little grey calico cat is home from a week at the OCEAN STATE VETERINARY SPECIALISTS in Rhode Island where she received top notch care from Amy, her day-to-day caregiver and Dr Susan Newell the vet specialist who treated her with radioactive iodine to cure her hyperthyroid disease.

Emmi has had a rough few months with trials of meds, labs, bolus' of fluids when dehydration and anorexia got the best of her from adverse med reactions.
Emmi is one of my in-house models who is the subject of many paintings and inspiration for paintings that help homeless animals. Her face is in collections around the globe and she really is one of the treasures of my life. At age 14 we are hoping this treatment will give her many more years with us while having a good life.

So today is a blessing to me to have her back home and being the little noodge she can be when she wants my attention. She has forgiven us for bringing her to the Vet for a week stay.

I would recommend RADIO ACIVE IODINE therapy as the FIRST choice in a HYPERTHYROID diagnosed cat...the cost of treatment is in the 1300.00 price range but you save many vet trips with your cat for meds and lab rechecks, possible adverse med reactions that cause your cat distress, take time from healing and money too!
I wish I had gone with it from the moment she was diagnosed and we would have made her comfortable months before. Now we know and want to share the info.

Signs of Hyperthyroid...excessive hunger, constant eating and very noticable weight loss....also dull coat, nausea, vomiting, dehydration. Age related...in senior cats...they are now suggesting Thyroid lab work with elder cat routine check ups...think 12 yrs old at least. The effects for the cat with hyperthyroid disease is rapid heart rate, rapid metabolism (the reaseon for increase weightloss) and hypertension, heart attack and/or stroke is possible.

Once they have had the treatment, a one injection procedure, and they have returned to safe levels of radiation to be discharged home...Follow-up for Radioactive Iodine Rx is labs at one month post treatment and then three months to check the thyroid levels. IF your cat becomes HYPO-thyroid after treatment they do not require treatment, according to Emmi's Vet at OSVS.

If you don't have Pet Health Insurance (we don't) as a pet owner the smart thing to do is set up a savings acct for pet health where you bank when pets are young and vital...save a little each week and set it aside for their Vet care. It helps when those times come...and they will...when you need to spend a little more on their vet visits.

Please feel free to pass this info on to others who have older cats in their houshold.

It is great when we learn these things to share and hopedfully save others prolonged discomfort if possible
