P & G dry Pet Foods recall is expanded to cat and dog food

Proctor and Gamble expands their recall on dry pet food to include both some Iams and Eukenuba brands for both cats and dogs. The voluntary recall includes about 800,000 to 950,000 of Iams veterinary formulas and some specialized dog food due to salmonella concerns. Search and Rescue Dog - A New Job For Pearl

A New Job For Pearl

As a writer some stories you write have a real impact on your life. In this case I was intrigued to find that not only was Pearl, a search and rescue dog, who herself was rescued from the shelter. Reading "A New Job For Pearl", I discovered a new prospective on how animals can help us.

Than I learned more about the dedication and determination of the 2nd grad chilldren of Rancho Romero School in Alamo, CA, their teacher and all those volunteers involved with raising money for the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation to train another search and rescue dog. I was so taken by it I too wanted to help these children raise the money and make people aware of how animals can impact our lives.

I wrote two articles about Pearl:

The class has now raised $6000 towards the $10,000 needed to cover the cost of training another search and rescue dog. They now need your help to raise the additional $4000 to realize their goal.

Middle Eastern Salukis - A Growing Concern!

The situation with abandoned Middle Eastern Salukis grows worse. We need your help to spread the word that abandoned Salukis in the Middle East are in need of care and loving homes. To continue our work in helping them we need donations, adopters, and foster homes. By raising awareness of this increasing problem, we hope to get help from other groups and individuals internationally.

We regularly receive pleas for help from various parts of the Middle East. Julie from Doha has written to us: "I live in Doha and recently started to care for an abandoned and starving Saluki mother and her 3 surviving pups living in perilous conditions on a building site near my home. The watchman on the site told us she had been thrown from a car. As other dogs had started to join this family, the local residents were on the verge of calling the police, who would come and shoot them all (in reality, using them for target practice as those who have witnessed the spectacle say it can take a couple of hours until the injured dogs are finally cornered and killed). The manager of a local vets practice, Kim, offered to help by taking them into a spare room in her surgery as an emergency measure, a contact managed to convince the police to give us a couple of days, and we caught Momma (who is unsurprisingly timid), the 3 pups.... the boy pup sadly died shortly after rescue, Momma is now temporarily on a farm, one of the girl pups is fostered with me, one in a holding pen at the vets. However, we don't have a longer term solution for them. The local animal shelter is full to bursting and also takes in abandoned Salukis." Kim from Doha Vet inQatar writes: "I hope you will please help...this little girl saluki, 2 months old, we have taken in. She was being raised to be a hunting dog and has a minor fracture on her leg, which is already healing she can put weight on it. However, what is so appalling is the owner has decided at 8 days old all the saluki pups will have their ears cut off. He owns over 200 dogs. The ears are cut off without anesthesia, using scissors because they think it will make the dogs run faster.

This little girl needs love.....she is so sweet, please if anyone can foster or accept her into your family.I can look beyond this mutilation .....can you ????? her little eyes are filled with hope and thanks. We still have many pups, kittens, cats and dogs, our clinic is full. Thank you for all your help and support."

SALUKIS SEIZED IN GEORGIA RESCUE

For those of you not familiar with the breed, the Saluki is the oldest breed. The pharaohs use Salukis to hunt Gazelle and rabbits. The Saluki was one of the few breeds to sleep in the Pharaohs tents. Salukis are in the sighthound family along with the Greyhound, Whippet and Afghan.

About 18 months ago, STOLA rescued 40 Saluki hounds in the Elektra Rescue case. Stola hoped a Saluki rescue of that magnitude would be a unique event, but now they are facing another large rescue of up to 29 Salukis. Stola was informed that Animal Control of Gwinnett County, Georgia was in the process of seizing 19 Salukis from a home in Duluth, GA. Just a few days earlier, Gwinnett county had impounded 100 animals from a different case, so they had very little space to house an additional number of Salukis. Stola is very grateful to Gwinnett County Animal Control for turning the Salukis over to them without putting them through the trauma of a shelter impound situation. STOLA had to agree to have all the 19 Salukis neutered/spayed and to provide Animal Control with proof of neutering in the form of veterinary certificates. STOLA had no choice but to comply with this mandate. If Stola did not agree to this, all the dogs would have been impounded into Animal Control facilities and been neutered there, which would have been very traumatic for these Salukis.

These 19 Salukis have been turned over to STOLA's custody. An additional 10 Salukis in this case may also be turned over to Stola. STOLA will need funding to pay for veterinary medical care and transportation to carefully screened adoptive homes. With this number of dogs Stola needs to raise $25,000 for their care. Stola is asking for your generosity in assisting them to help these needy Salukis. Situations like this are very difficult on everyone involved, but it is hardest on the dogs.
