CA Wildfire Animal Rescue wtih HSUS NRRO

HSUS NRRO arrives at the Staging Area in San Diego

The Humane Society Disaster team from Billings, Montana left Wednesday around 2:00 to help with the rescue of animals in the San Diego area. Amy, a veterinarian, Wendy, a vet tech, and Andrew, a wilderness first responder make up the team. The team's mission was to bring the HSUS 30 foot horse trailer filled with supplies, dog crates, horse panels and more to the San Diego area as quickly as possible and remain as volunteers until the crisis was over. Driving through the nights and stopping only for refueling and short sleeps, the team reached the stage area today with the equipment.
A special thanks to the HSUS NRRO disaster team!!

Andrew and Wendy are greeted in San Diego by a rescued horse held in the HSUS rescue facility.
Photos are from Amy's cell phone. Stay tuned for more information about what the HSUS NRRO team in San Diego is doing.

California Fires - Supplies For Dog Owners Affected by the Fires

In the face of advancing flames, and under urgent evacuation orders,
people reach instinctively for their beloved pets, but in the rush to leave,
often forget to take the food and other provisions necessary for their care. In
order to help fill this need, Dennis Sprung, President of the American Kennel
Club, has coordinated with Susan Sholar, President of the California Federation
of Dog Clubs, to send an immediate donation of food, collars and leashes,
and crates to help those dog owners affected by the devastating fires in
southern California. CFODC members, and anyone else needing assistance in providing for their pets̢۪security and well-being as a result of these fires, should call the California School of Dog Grooming at 1-800-949-3746, and ask for Susan.
The school, located in San Diego, is the designated site for distribution of the
donated supplies, as well as a growing list of volunteers with offers to foster
care, or with available kennels, dog runs, RV parking spaces, spare bedrooms, sofa
beds, and the like.

The AKC and CFODC, in order to maximize their opportunity to help, ask
that you cross post this message wherever possible.

Thank you.

Where's Dave, Director of HSUS NRRO

Dave's Rescued Racoon that now thrives at the Beartooth Nature Center

Dave is always busy helping the animals whether it's hands on rescues, educating people about animals or lobbying for new laws and law enforcement to protect the animals. It's wonderful to know that the animals have such a wonderful advocate. Here's his latest update:

"Can it really be nearing the end of October??? The past few weeks were a blur that included an excellent evening with your own Sandra Merwin, husband Andrew and a table full of other animal friendly supporters of the Humane Society. We attended the Beartooth Nature Centers annual Feast for the Beasts and a great educational program by Montana Wildlife Expert Vince Yannon.

We have a very active "animal fighting" week. First I sent two NRRO staffers to participate in the record making cock fighting confiscation in San Diego involving almost FIVE THOUSAND fighting Birds. Then I went to Twin Falls Idaho and held a town hall meeting on animal fighting and met with agencies and law enforcement to promote a felony animal fighting bill for 2008.

While in Idaho I conducted a day of board training for the People for Pets Magic Valley Humane Society, and met with some wildlife rehab folks about future projects. While traveling I was still able to work on cruelty cases in Montana (inhumane euthanasia), Colorado (abuse) and North Dakota ( canned hunting).

I also was a guest speaker for two workshops at the Mid American Zookeepers Association. I spoke to zoo management on how zoo's and humane societies could work better together and how zookeeper's can better prepare for disasters.

And finally I met with city officials to discuss a dog park planning committee and to see a demonstration of a new solar animal proof waste receptacle. Throw in a half dozen conference calls on wildlife issues, disaster preparedness and wild horse contraception and it was a well traveled and productive time for animals."

HAPPY NEWS - a Dog is saved!

UPDATE....

the Dalmatian in the previous post was rescued and saved from euthanaisia. I believe there were inquires for some of the others also that may have been rescued.

I know it is not enough but at least we got some help here.

EDUCATION at every opportunity and shared with everyone you know helps...when they share with everyone they know.

Please keep the info moving out to everyone that SPAYING AND NEUTERING all domestic animals is the baseline.
Working to indentify and close PUPPY MILLS and education about those factories manufacturing puppies for PETSHOPS will help.

BOYCOTTING the PURCHASE of PETSHOP PETS might help with closing puppy mills.

and supporting rescue and adoption of animals needing homes....all helps.

Keep the Faith and Spread the word to help homeless animals.

I wish...I wish...

I wish there was an end to the need for finding homes...

THIS JUST IN...an urgent plea... (from Susan DRTB founder)

Dalmatian Rescue of Tampa Bay desperately needs your help. We have NO foster homes...we are already paying to board one Dalmatian we just pulled out of a shelter in Georgia. We are getting bombarded with calls for help.

Please take a look at the faces of all these beautiful animals in Clay County. If you know anyone who can adopt even one.....or help us foster the Dalmatian....pass on the word. If these sad faces aren't enough to convince everyone to adopt and not buy from a breeder, I just don't know what is. These animals have three days. PLEASE TALK TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO ADOPT, ADOPT, ADOPT.

Better to light a candle for one lost animalthan to curse the darkness of man's indifference.Saving just one animal won't change the worldbut it surely will change the world for that one animal.

Where's Dave, Director of HSUS NRRO?

Dave has been really busy. Here is his latest email.

HELPING PEOPLE HELP ANIMALS

Another exciting week! I thought the week would be an office week where I could plan logistics for a whole series of October field projects including a number of power point presentations I will be giving at Senator Max Baucus's Faith Based Summit on Tuesday, two presentations for the Midwest Zoo Keepers Association; a daylong Board of Directors training in Twin Falls Idaho, and two public fireside animal forums in Pocatello and Boise Idaho...and all this in the next ten days!!!

HELPING THE WILD FELINES

But the opportunity came up to deploy a mobile spay neuter clinic on the Crow Reservation that would help address a neighborhood population of cats. We were presented with a problem that really did not have many good outcomes. But with some networking with an area DVM, and another animal welfare group, we figured out we could make this project a disaster training exercise and field test one of our mobile trailers as an emergency animal shelter.

Of course these projects don't just happen. So before the DVM and her team showed up at 10:00 a.m. on October 4th... all 35 suspected cats had to be captured , prepped , and a protocol for recovery designed.

So on the 1st, I drove the 86 miles to the site and set up 22 cats traps and wired opened the doors so that the cats could eat freely for a few days. Then on the night of the 3rd I drove back and set the traps and caught the 12 or so easy to catch cats and set them up with water in cages in a shed we prepared for them. ( this way the DVM was guaranteed to have some cats to begin surgeries on)
BAITING THE FELINE TRAPS
I returned at O-dark thirty the next morning and reset the traps and by the time the Veterinary team arrived I had caught a total of Thirty Two cats for surgery. The team of eight volunteers completed those 32 surgeries in about 3.5 hours and the cats were set up for another quiet night in the shed so we could check each one before they were released the next morning. This also allowed me to set up some special traps baited with catnip, beaver castor and other treats to catch the always difficult to catch last few cats. The next morning I caught the final five cats for a total of 37 cats. But these five I had to drive into Billings to have spayed, wait for them to become ready to travel and then make the final trip back to their home.

So I still ended up driving almost 900 miles in just three days of trapping... but the stress on the cats was much less than if I trapped and transported each one to Billings. We also learned that the trailer worked fine... and that we could use some different techniques on this type of agricultural cat colony. About half of the cats will eventually be removed from this farm site...but for now the population will not be growing and larger and the cats will be able to put all their energy into getting ready for winter and not into reproductive behaviors.

So while i am not quite ready with my series of power points I did get some quality field time in and was able to help improve the lives of both people and felines. So it was time well spent. Now I just have to survive the rest of the month!!! ( i will post some jpegs of the cat clinic later this week)

The GOOD NEWS / the BAD NEWS....

click this link! tampabays10.com - Tampa Bay's 10 News - WTSP

READ ALL ABOUT IT!

I just got an email from Susan, the Dalmatian Guardian Angel over at DALMATIAN RESCUE of TAMPA BAY...she has been helping wtih this case and told me that the GOOD NEWS is they will be helping find loving homes for the 2 Dalmatians who the police got to in time. The bad news is that the dalmatian Alex was near death and the kindest thing that could be done for him was euthansia.
I did email the channel that reported the story and voiced my comments.
My voice is little...but when we all shout together we make a mighty noise that can be heard all the way to heaven!

Please pass this link around and share your disgust for bad things that happen to good dogs for no good reason. Lets educate as many as we can that we won't stand for this meaness and waste of life.
thanks!
Save a life...rescue when you can and support those who do the hands on fostering and care!

Where's Dave, Director of HSUS NRRO

I just received this email from Dave. He has had a very trying week. All the artist at AHAA send him sympathy in the loss of his "Lucy". In his own words:

"Another exciting week. Those rescued tadpoles from the August urban sprawl pond rescues are turning into Frogs ( err actually mostly TOADS) this week. This is good news because we had narrowed the potential species down to either non-native Bullfrogs or native spade foot toads. So now we will see if the weather will allow us to release these toads yet this fall or if we will have to over-winter them in my garage in a toad hibernaculum. If they turned out to be bullfrogs we would have to ship them to southern states where bullfrogs are native. (bullfrogs often get released from people who got tadpoles at a pet store and grew tired of the frogs!!!)

We also rescued a young male pheasant that flew into a picture window. After 24 hours of care from being "stunned" the bird was released at the capture site. Imagine the "dreams" this pheasant must be having about be captured by aliens!!!!

The rest of my week was consumed in planning a unique mobile spay neuter clinic for next week. We are going onto the Crow reservation with a small surgical and trapping team to live-trap and spay up to 35 cats at one farmhouse. Normally we would transport 6-10 cats at a time to any available clinic but the transport stress to the cats and the expense of sending someone out to trap and transport three to four times made these events very difficult.
So this trial event is taking the team to the property and getting all the cats spayed without having to transport them.

For this week I hope you will allow me to close my Blog with a totally self indulgent obituary that celebrates the life of my oldest non-human daughter.

Thank you for your artistic efforts to help animals". Dave

In Memory of Lucy Pauli

Lucy Pauli: Gooood Girl ! Lucy Pauli, 14 (98) , left her worldly body to join her soul mates in the afterlife early in the Morning of September 24th.

For fourteen years Lucy has offered unconditional love, asking only occasionally for some quality time, a slice of Wisconsin Cheddar or a simple pat on the head.

Lucy was a working class gal. Her primary job was protecting the three Pauli women and property, but for her entire life she served as foster mother, therapist and educator to literally hundreds of rescue dogs, cats, exotics and wild animals that passed through her domain. She was especially fond of the unusually odiferous foster animals like the opossums, and bobcats, and unimpressed with the Tigers, bears and alligators that she was responsible for. More recently her assignment was to impress upon two young rehab fox squirrels that they should seek the safety of high branches whenever a predator comes by. She accepted this duty with relish and the scenes of this geriatric patron repeatedly "treeing" the baby squirrels will bring smiles in our memories for years to come.

For those who want to honor Lucy or other nonhuman family members who have crossed the rainbow bridge we ask you simply to take an extra few minutes each day to pet, walk or praise the companion animals in your life.

We want to thank the Billings Animal Shelter for bringing us Lucy 14 years ago, and Doctor Amy Lamm of Vet2go for providing Lucy pain relief in her final waning hours. -- Dave
