Success Story!

Success Story!
by Melanie DeAeth

A
t
True Blue Animal Rescue we face sad situations every day but we also get to see happy endings as well. This is the case with the horse, Special T. She had a terrible bone infection in her withers and was at an auction being bid on by slaughter house buyers when I bid against them and won. The vet told me how difficult it would be to heal a bone infection, but I didn't let that stop me. After lots of antibiotics and months of flushing the wound with water, Special T's withers finally healed! She was the second rescue horse take in by T-bar and has been with us for well over three years. The infection caused damage to the bone in Special T's withers and because of that she is a companion only horse and should never be ridden. That made it hard to find a forever home for Special T, and so it seemed that she was destined to live her life in rescue. Then one day Special T's picture on the web page finally caught someone's eye and they came out to meet her. Angela and her husband fell in love with this beautiful girl immediately and decided to adopt.

On the day that Special T left for her new home she posed with her beloved new owners and then loaded like a champ. Though I know she may have seemed out of sorts, she was going to "her" home. Maybe she knew it as she started off. Maybe when she looked back, she did to take one last look at the farm that gave her a chance; where she became the lady she is today. God Bless.

... and Popeye

When a Dog is Dumped (continued)
by Melanie DeAeth

If you think Darling's story is a harsh reality, let me tell you about Popeye. Poor Popeye was lost and searching for an owner when he met the worst human possible. This person decided that rather than take Popeye to a humane shelter, he would kill Popeye himself so he shot him in the head. Poor Popeye didn't die because the bullet simply shattered his sinus cavity and lodged in his jaw area. Popeye ran away, but the man got him back and this time he tied him to a tree and beat him about the head with a golf club. This caused more damage to Popeye's sinus cavity but spared his brain and so, he lived. Lucky for Popeye a kind neighbor witnessed this and called the police who then called True Blue Animal Rescue to come and help him.

When we picked up Popeye that day he was still wagging his tail in search of that human who was nice to him before dumping him. After several days at the vet, IV fluids, anti-inflammatory medicine and antibiotics, Popeye is now on the road to recovery. He's eating and drinking on his own and his personality is back full force. This friendly fellow is housebroken, playful and very loving. He adores stuffed toys and carries them around in his mouth with his damaged head held high. He lost the vision in one eye, and he worries when he's not with one of us, but we are optimistic that Popeye will heal and have a good life now.

These are only two sad stories about two of the lucky ones: Darling and Popeye. They were lucky because they came to rescue and recovered. If they hadn't they would have died alone and scared with people around them that would rather harm an animal than take the time to help them.

If you can't keep your dog anymore or you find a stray dog, please bring them to a rescue or shelter where they will be safe and at least have a chance to find a new home. If you would rather not take the dog to a shelter and all the rescues are full, then find a home for him yourself. Put an ad in the paper, put up fliers and ask the people who call questions to find out if they will take care of their pet. Get a vet reference from them and ask where the dog will be living. You will be able to tell them about the dog to make sure that this new home will be a good match for this dog. If we all do our part, then together we can make a difference and stop animal abuse, neglect and overpopulation.

GOOD PEOPLE, DOING GOOD THINGS...

These two puppies are my artistic version of two of six puppies who recently came into FOSTER CARE with SAVE THE DALMATIANS ... volunteers are caring for them.
One of the Foster Mom's is Donna...she has 3 of the pups and was kind enough to sharethe images she took of them with some DAL PALS and let us know what she was up to.

She gave me permission to use the images and share the story for charity fundraising through Save the Dals.
The Puppy sitting up is Harley...he is a male, one of 2 who are the stronger of the 3 she is sponsoring. The Puppy lying down is Scout...she is just out of intensive vet care and we are hoping she has the toughness to survive...she is trying now with Donna at home. One puppy of the original 7 didn't make it. One thing is certain, no matter what, they are knowing loving care!

These pups and their mom came into rescue severely ill...every little bit helps SAVE THE DALMATIANS.
Currently there is the SUMMER FUNDRAISER RAFFLE going on...DRAWING is JUNE 3RD. check their site: www.savethedals.org

EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS! GIVE A LITTLE, HELP A LOT!

And thanks for all the support of ART HELPING ANIMALS...we appreciate the help for homeless animals and the charities we create for.

Darling

When a Dog is Dumped (continued)
by Melanie DeAeth

Let me tell you about what Darling encountered when left to fend for herself in the country. Darling is much too friendly to have been a lifelong stray and because of this she trusted the wrong people.

I found Darling at a gas station. She was skinny, had an abscess and infection around her head and neck and she has a scar along the top of her back that is typically seen on dogs when someone squirts lighter fluid on an animal and lights it. Darling had nearly given up hope and was sitting to the side looking sad and forlorn when I called her over. She decided to try and find help one more time and slowly walked over.

After a trip to the vet to clean her wounds and get her started on antibiotics Darling started to come out of her shell. With plenty of good food Darling quickly put on weight and became the energetic, happy, lab mix that she had been before. The scar on her back will be a reminder that not all people are nice and that bad things can happen when you're left out alone.

When a Dog is Dumped

When a Dog is Dumped
by Melanie DeAeth

In True Blue Animal Rescue
we take in dogs for a variety of reasons but the biggest problem that contributes to overpopulation and homelessness in dogs is DUMPING.

There is a great misconception by people who believe that those of us that live in the country want another dog. Just because we have large yards doesn't mean we can properly care for an endless number of dogs. So, what happens to the dumped dog? At best he will be taken to a no kill animal rescue but rescues are often full and cannot take in every animal that needs a home.

The next thing that might happen to a dumped dog is that a kind person might find him a home and if they cannot they would take him to the safety of an animal shelter. In this case the dog might be euthanized, which makes us all sad, but until people stop indiscriminate breeding and dumping their unspayed dogs in the country there will continue to be more dogs than we, as a society, can absorb. Euthanasia is still more humane than dumping and the two most recent dogs we have taken in illustrate that point.

The story of Darling and Popeye will continue. Please bookmark the Art Helping Animals News and come back to read about Darling and Popeye.

Memorial Day...

Just taking a moment to remember all those who have served us so well,

To remember those who have given everything for others,

Thinking of those we miss.

Take a moment today to give thanks and honor memories.

Saying Good-bye to MAUDE

WILLING HEARTS DALMATIAN RESCUE recently sent the sad news of the passing of one of their rescued senior dalmatians. It is always so sad to lose one of these wonderful and sweet rescues...BUT...let me share the story.

Maude was rescued from a PA shelter after WILLING HEARTS got the call to see if they could try to help her. The shelter would euthanize her there and then if she was beyond help.
She was found in terrible shape, especially the infection in her mouth and her skin...they could NOT leave her behind.
Maude was taken in and given vet care and was found to be sweet and loving and spent the last five months of her life KNOWING kindness and care and love.

This news came to us 2 days ago from the Rescue:
Maude came down with bloat and we had to send her to the bridge. It was a terribly difficult thing to do but she was going down fast and was going to suffer. She was a loving girl and we loved her while she was with us.

MAUDE knew LOVE.
...and THAT is the foundation of WILLING HEARTS DALMATIAN RESCUE. They tend to the worst of the needy. They give love and care to the saddest, abandoned, neglected and abused!

Willing Hearts is an all volunteer rescue and donations are how they pay the bills for VET care for these poor animals. Donations buy these Dals some time and love.
Have a heart, view their site, give a little...Please.
You can see MAUDE's story on their site: http://www.dogsaver.org/willinghearts/

HAPPY ADOPTION NEWS!

UPDATE: COCO

Faxon Animal League rescue in Fall RIVER, MA reports that COCO the Liver Dal was happily adopted and living a new life with his family!

Coco was the overweight Dalmatian pictured in the posts below (GET FIT!) that was abandoned by his owner who moved away and left him with a family who cared for him until they couldn't do it anymore...after a year he was turned into the shelter.

The staff at FAXON reported that COCO was a real gentleman and not to mention a beautiful Dalmatian Guy! With weight management under their care he was getting into shape and was thankfully adopted to his forever home! COCO was a senior aged Dal. It was the least he deserved.

KUDO's to FAXON for the adoption efforts on Coco's behalf!

Today they report they have a MASTIFF who is recovering well from abdominal surgery...he suffered the affliction large breeds sometimes have with torsion of the stomach. But the great medical care and rehab is a life saver...he is healing well and getting ready to be adopted.

GET INTO SHAPE!

GET FIT!

It is very tempting to give the last bites or leftovers to your pet...we hate to throw food away...BUT...we don't want to kill them with "kindness" by over-feeding them.

While we are thinking spring/summer and getting into shape please take a look at your pets and adjust their diets to help them "get into shape" too!

Their HEARTS & JOINTS will thank you and they will have even more time to share with you.
they also love attention and exercise so even just short periods of play have big benefits to their health.

If you are not sure what amounts you should be feeding your pets...check with your vet. If your pet is severely overweight you NEED to get some vet advice about food and exercise for your faithful companion.

We want them to be healthy, stay healthy and thrive for optimal quality of life.
Coco is the model of the before picture in this piece ...he was a Faxon Animal Rescue League dog up for adoption...brought in very overweight and started on a healthy eating plan giving him a new lease on life!

Happy Tales...(tails?)...TALES!

I find myself sitting at the computer this morning reading the success stories on many of our ART HELPING ANIMALS supported charities ....they are such happy tales being told by the families who adopted these formerly homeless pets.

Before I know it an hour has flown by and I am lost in the stories.

These families are so very giving and special to take in these discarded, abandoned or abused pets...now rehabbed by the volunteers who work to help the animals overcome some of the behaviors from lack of training by their previous owners...or the fears they may have acquired from abusive experiences...IT HAPPENS! They CAN BE SAVED WITH LOVING CARE.

Many of these pets have also received medical care and have come back from the brink of death or very serious illnesses to be made whole and ready to begin enjoying a wonderful new life.
Some even get into families with children who can match their new found energies.
And in these cases I see the REAL EXTRA BENEFIT of the families who have now demonstrated to their children that ADOPTION of homeless animals is a truly wonderful thing.
A great lesson to pass onto a child!

So if you have a few minutes (or an hour) to read some fantastic and uplifting stories...visit the rescue org's sites on ART HELPING ANIMALS and see the very good works, of some very good people HELPING HOMELESS ANIMALS create new happy tales!

It's all About Families!

Animal Rescue Organizations are made up of many volunteers...They become the "families" of these rescued homeless animals until they can find that special family of their own that every dog deserves....
***
READ ABOUT THIS "FAMILY"

Beagles of New England States was founded in June of 2003 with a mission to rescue, rehome, spay/neuter and provide necessary medical care to beagles in need in the New England Area.Since then, over 625 Beagles have found Forever Homes through Beagles of New England States
***

THE BEGINNING
BONES (Beagles of New England States, Inc) was founded in May of 2003 after BREW, another beagle rescue organization, made the decision to close their two year old New England Chapter. Five BREW NE volunteers felt there was a continuing need for beagle rescue in the NE region and made the decision to organize as a new rescue. During the next six months BONES became incorporated, received its 501 (c) (3) status, created a website, and wrote and implemented guidelines and procedures. While this work was in process, beagles were being brought into the program and wonderful homes were found for them.
***
Bones has many wonderful ways you can help the homeless animals they serve who are up for adoption...you will be amazed at how proactive this org is.
Dedication to one purpose by many supporters and volunteers really DOES make this group a Family!

Monroe
Hi! My name is Monroe Moira. When my mom adopted me in October of 2001 she said everyone has to have a middle name and I was no exception. The wonderful folks at WHDR named me and my brothers and sisters after presidents. And my mom liked the name Monroe for a girl so she picked Moira as my middle name. In Celtic it means GREAT. I think it’s very fitting!
We were rescued from a puppy mill. (Pebbles’ story also appears here-she’s my sister. Don’t we look alike?) I went to live in the beautiful countryside of Maryland with my big sister Loki Grace and a poodle sister, Shelldyn Anne. Shelly got sick shortly after I arrived and left us in May of 2002. I hear Mom also had another poodle named Marquis Sydney. She talks about him all the time. Apparently he could lick an ice cream bowl cleaner than I can. Well, we’ll see about that!
I have a few issues due to my somewhat rocky start in life but my mom and dad are helping me get over them. I have a behaviorist that helps me with the things I’m afraid of. And I get to go swimming at a doggie spa every Saturday morning! My Mom trains with me every day so that I burn off some energy. I’m not so sure about all this stuff but the treats I get when I’m good are really tasty! There is a picture here of me swimming at the spa. The nice lady who helps me swim tells me I’m hot stuff. You bet I am, that’s a heated pool!
I love my adoptive mom and dad. They give me lots of attention and my mom tells me she loves me all the time. She calls me her little sugar plum. My favorite place to nap is in her lap. It gets a little crowded when Loki and I both squeeze in the chair with her but we can make it work, as you can see. Sometimes I just go jump in Mom’s lap and kiss her a lot, just to let her know that I love her too. My start in life may have been a bit difficult, but I’m living the good life now!

Meet ROCKY -have a Willing Heart!

WILLING HEARTS DALMATIAN RESCUE
INTRODUCING...

Meet Rocky

Rocky is a 9 yr old male purebred Dalmatian who lost his home due to a divorce. He is housebroken, good with children, other dogs and cats. He isshy and a little uncertain at first but warms up quickly and is very easygoing. We prefer he go to a home with children over 10 as he deserves aquiet home at this time in his life.
From Rocky's foster mom.....So far I can tell you he is very adoptable, very loving, eager to please, and strikingly quiet. Not a peep, knows sit and stay and as we could telldoesnt mind traveling, no signs of food aggression, luvs other dogs, tailgoes crazy when he sees another dog, not finicky, that boy will eatanything, and luuuuuuuuuuuuuvs pedigree jumbobones! He hid it under hisblanket when he was done. Super cute boy.
Update 5/5/07:
A few words from Rocky himself,

My original mom named me Rocky but I'm much more a Mr Happy. My foster mom laughs 'cause I'm always wagging my tail and smiling. She keeps calling me a 'love' and smooching me right on the lips. I'm kind of liking it. She loves when I rub my head all over her, I'm really just trying to get her to rub my ears but if she likes to think its me hugging her, so be it. I'm crate trained and very comfortable in it, and just as comfortable laying outside on the grass, smelling the air and watching the birds fly around. I'll lay outside all day wagging my tail happily at the birds if I could. I love other dogs, I have a great big shepherd mix foster brother who I get along with just fine. He barks every time someone comes to the door. I dont get it. I guess he's some kind of watch dog. I'm not much of a barker. I've only barked a couple times since I've been in my foster home and that was to get the next door neighbors dog to come play with me and when I was ready to come in from outside. I love spending quality time with my foster mom, wherever she is I prefer to be. Sometimes she forgets I'm even in the room I'm so quiet, but I'm just happy to be there. I also enjoy going for car rides, I'm not like some silly dogs that get car sick, I could drive for hours very happily. I've been taught the basic commands and have just been reinforced with my housebreaking. when I first meet you I may be very scared and I may shake and have a couple of accidents in the house, but its just cause I'm really a mommy's boy and it will take me a day or so to get used to you. Please be patient with me. My life has been pretty confusing lately and I'm really eager to have a permanent mom and dad.
luv Rockyaka Mr. Happy

Lincoln, a Super Snuggly Dachshund

As a founding member of Art Helping Animals, I paint to help animals in all parts of the USA. My current art project will benefit Lincoln, a purebred Dachshund in need of a forever home in Florida. Lincoln was rescued by DARE • Dachshund Adoption, Rescue and Education headquartered in Florida.

Lincoln is a 5-year old, 11 pound red dachshund boy. Lincoln needed to gain a pound or two and has done that as he waits patiently for adoption. He used to be paralyzed in his back legs but had back surgery in November and now he can walk again, a little wobbly but he's getting around. Lincoln does not have full control of his potty skills though and that will likely not come back, but he is a SUPER snuggly little guy and his most favorite thing to do is give you kisses and kisses and more kisses. Lincoln is so hoping for a forever home of his very own where he can be adored.

My painting of Lincoln is inspired by the photo above and can be seen at the Art Helping Animals Gallery. In the meantime, please visit the DARE web site and donate something to help with Lincoln's care and medical expenses. Small donations add up. If you are so moved to give Lincoln the forever home he waits for, apply to adopt him.

Mother's Day is coming....

MOTHER'S DAY is a great time to think about how we can prevent FERAL CATS from becoming "mothers" of unwanted litters ...find out what you can do in your own local area.

FERAL CAT COALITION OF OREGON
is one of the supported charity/rescues of ART HELPING ANIMALS
they capture, spay/neuter and release feral cats.

Below is a summary of how it works....at FCCO...visit their site to see all their news. http://www.feralcats.com

Mobile Clinics
Click for a
schedule of upcoming clinics.
Our mobile clinic is equipped with three operating stations and enables us to offer clinics throughout Oregon.
What a sight! After the cats are checked-in they await surgery. All traps and carriers are covered to keep the cats calm.

These two handsome felines nervously await their turn for surgery. Soon they'll be returned to their caregivers.
Cats awaiting surgery are transported to the anesthesia room, the rear door of the mobile hospital, 4-5 at a time. Once anesthetized, each cat receives a pain relief injection and is passed to the prep area.
In the prep area, cats are prepped for surgery and male cats are neutered.
All cats' ears are tipped so that they can be identified as having already participated in the clinic.
Three veterinarians can spay cats simultaneously in our surgical suite. All veterinarians who participate in our program volunteer their time.
In Post-op, the cats have their temperature taken, their anesthesia recovery is continuously monitored, they are flea combed & flea sprayed, they are kept warm, and are given fluids as needed.
All cats are monitored until they are fully awake and are then sent home with their caregiver.
